Israel's defense minister told ground troops yesterday to "be ready" to invade northern Gaza, but it's not clear when they might. Under an agreement with President Joe Biden, the military was set to allow some trucks with food, water and medical supplies into the besieged territory. Egypt has pushed, so far unsuccessfully, to allow in fuel for generators to power healthcare facilities. |

In an Oval Office address last night, President Biden said he would request more Funding for wars in Israel and Ukraine. His national security funding request will reportedly total $105 billion, including $60 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel, $14 billion for the U.S.-Mexico border and $10 billion for unspecified humanitarian efforts. For any of that funding to be approved, the House will need first to select a speaker. |

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said inflation isn't falling fast enough and hinted that the central bank could extend interest rate increases until the economy cools down. Inflation has fallen from a peak of 7% in June 2022 to 3.5% last month, but the Fed's official goal rate is 2%. We know he didn't say, "Not enough of you are unemployed," but it sort of feels that way. |

This clip is exactly what it sounds like, and it looks really cool. Sam Raimondi, aka the DIY Huntress, said the quick project takes just two tools you already have and is impossible to mess up. We have screwed up elementary school crafts — as adults — but this one looks manageable even for us. |

On this second-to-last Friday before Halloween, we recommend — in order of increasing spookiness — a new take on the Russian musical fairy tale Peter & The Wolf, Disney's Goosebumps revamp, and a 100% scares-the-pants-off-you horror film. If you want to watch something cute instead, check out a second season of toddlers running errands in Japan in Old Enough! |

One thing we love: Hitting a Broadway show with friends. One thing we hate: Planning an outdoor party for months — only to have it postponed by yet another rainy weekend. One thing we ate: Kumamoto-style ramen with pork slices and soft-boiled eggs. |
