The music team has been often described as the “’hood ’NSync” thanks to their unique blend of Southern-fried rap, hashtaggable hooks and sunny-side-up lyrics. With dedi9cation and lots of hard work, they are on a mission to celebrate “the good life, the family, paychecks, riding in the front seat, good vibes”; a sugar-rush of youthful optimism for an anxious world.

Rae Sremmurd (pronounced “Ray-Shrim-er”) are best known for their 2016 smash “Black Beatles,” which soundtracked the Mannequin Challenge viral meme — even the likes of Michelle Obama and Paul McCartney joined the challenge.

Early Life And Background

Khalif Malik Ibn Shaman Brown (also known as Swae Lee) and his big brother Aaquil Iben Shamon Brown (also known as Slim Jxmmi) were on December 29, 1993 and June 7, 1995 respectively in Inglewood, California United States.

The two grew up with their mother, Bernadette Walker, and their brother, Michael, their father having abandoned his family a few years after the birth of his sons.

Their mother Bernadette Walker was an army veteran who was regularly deployed in different states. Owing to their mother’s job and lifestyle, they moved several times, leaving California for Mississippi and Maryland and finally settling in the military post of Fort Hood in Texas.

They started their music career like a joke, at some point they started practicing, dancing and writing music together at an early age. In Texas, around his 10th birthday, Khalif learned to produce music using Fruity Loops.

When they started receiving their middle school education, their family left Texas and moved back to Mississippi to join Bernadette’s newly found love, Floyd Sullivan, after she left the army. They settled in the city of Tupelo, Mississippi, in the notorious Ida Street housing projects, where their stepfather lived. The young couple had a son named Floyd Jr. Sullivan. To support the family and to keep the boys in school, their stepfather sold drugs.

Music Journey And Success

They started their musical career officially while they were still in middle school. They broke into the rap industry as Rae Sremmurd, Lee and Jimmy were in a trio called “Dem Outta State Boyz” which used to upload videos to social media like YouTube and songs to Reverbnation, trying to gain some recognition. few years later, they were discovered by P-Nasty who expressed his satisfaction and interest in their music and invited them to Atlanta.

They yielded to the P-Nasty advise and dropped everything they were doing and came over to Atlanta to launched their professional music career . After some time they teamed up with Mike WiLL Made It to produce their first two songs, “I Dip” and “We”. They released two tracks that didn’t receive too many attention but they didn’t let that bother them too much.

They stayed underground for some years and finally shot to stardom in early 2014, following the release of their single “No Flex Zone”. The single peaked at No. 35 on Billboard Hot 100 and spawned numerous remixes including by Nicki Minaj and Kid Ink. Their “No Type” track did better on the chart by rising to No. 16.

No Flex Zone” and No Type” was later featured on Rae Sremmurd’s upcoming debut album, “SremmLife” and it was released on January 6, 2015 through EarDrummers Entertainment and Interscope Records.

In June 2016, Rae Sremmurd took to their social media account to announce the released their next album “SremmLife 2” which eventually reached No. 5 on Billboard 200 upon its release in August. The LP was supported by “Black Beatles” featuring Gucci Mane and Produced by Mike WiLL Made It. This song suddenly became their biggest hit to date and even landed at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 in November.

Dem Outta St8 Boyz

When Jxmmi (pronounced “Jimmi”) and Swae were 14 and 13 years old respectively,  formed their first group, Dem Outta St8 Boyz — the name was a nod to their peripatetic childhoods. The third group member was Middlebrooks, whom the brothers met playing basketball.

Jxmmi and Swae were calling themselves Caliboy and Kid Crunk; Middlebrooks was Lil Pantz. They began to release music and low-fi videos through social media. Another boy, Jermarcus Jackson — aka JJ Srem — became their touring DJ.
