Watch Wearing Etiquette – 101

Our lives basically run on rules. Some follow them; some reject them, but most, know them. When every aspect of our life has rules attached to it, then how can we be unaware of the ones that govern the trivial art of watch wearing? Knowing watch Wearing etiquette will keep you from creating any potential faux pas. The following article shall tell you about all these rules so that you can know them before you break them, or may be, not.

Match your metals & colours

A very important rule men often ignore while wearing men’s Watches is keeping the colours in sync. Matching the metals and watch colour with the colour of your outfit should certainly be a priority when putting together an ensemble.
The colour of your belt buckles, shoe buckles, rings, collar bars or pins, and cufflinks should complement the metal colour of your watch, whether you are wearing a Rolex, Hublot or Breitling. One fashion disaster most men are especially guilty of making is wearing a brown band with a black suit. So, the next time you pick your watch make sure your focus is on the boldest parts of the watch including the colour of the strap, the colour of the metal and even the colour of the dial.

Pair watches with outfits appropriately

One of the biggest fashion faux pas a person can make is wearing an inappropriate dress to an inappropriate occasion; for starters, a suit on the beach is a complete no-no, until the event you are attending is a beach wedding. Similarly, your watch should complement the activity you are doing or the place you are visiting.
If you are hesitant about the choice you are making then try to wear watches that’ll complement your outfit. For example, choose sports watches with athletic wear and dress watches with business wear.

Don’t wear the same watch every day

Possessing a single timepiece is no excuse for wearing the same watch every day. Firstly, wearing a single watch every day will wear it off. Secondly, it’s very rare for a single watch to complement every outfit for every occasion. The office, the gym, sporting events, dinners, and parties are different moments and deserve different clothes and watches.

Wear your watch on the wrist that suits you

The age-old rule men have been following is to wear a watch on the wrist that is non-dominant. Reason being that it’d be opposite to the dominant hand. This is the one rule you can definitely break. You must wear the watch on the wrist you feel most confident and comfortable with.

Wear dark with dark, and light with light

If you are heading out for a day event, then the watch you should wear is one with a lighter dial, say white or cream coloured. However, if you are attending a party or dinner then the colour of dial should be darker like black, grey or browns. The science is simple. You would never imagine yourself wearing a tuxedo which is an evening wear for a brunch, similarly, a watch with a dark dial is supposed to be worn at night and not for a breakfast at the club.

Make it fit

The fit is the most important aspect of whatever you wear and watches for men are no different. The rule of thumb says that it should fit you in two key ways. Firstly, the dial should be in proportion to the wrist and secondly, the band should fit in a snug manner. A loose band looks messy and careless. In order to look sharp make sure you pay the jeweller a visit and get it sized appropriately as per your wrist. It’s a shame if your Hublot or Breitling wouldn’t fit well.

One thing all watch lovers should always take care of is buying watches only from authorised retailers such as Ethos Watch Boutiques. Wearing a fake watch is the biggest mistake you can make.
