What do Pharmaceutical Engineers do? Salary and Scope

Pharmaceutical engineering is branch of Pharmaceutical sciences that deals with synthesis of new drugs, efficient processes for manufacture of such drugs and their development in pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmaceutical Engineering also deals with designing, construction and operation of new plants that are used in research facilities. Additionally, they are also involved in maintenance of personal and environmental safety. A Pharmaceutical Engineer is always concerned with betterment of drug that remains effective against certain kind of disease. They also observe how long a drug remains effective for a particular disease.

What do Pharmaceutical Engineers do?

The basic job of a Pharmaceutical Engineer is to determine the technological devices and the efficient processes that are used for the synthesis of drugs. They also analyze the qualitative and quantitative relations of drugs i.e. how a certain drug should be offered to consumer. To a certain level, labeling of drugs is also Pharmaceutical Engineer’s job.

Safety works:

Pharmaceutical Engineers are responsible for all of the safety issues associated with the drugs that are produced by the pharmaceutical company. The dosage necessary for consumers is also responsibility of Pharmaceutical Engineers.

Manufacturing of new Drugs:

Pharmaceutical Engineers are also concerned with designing, construction and working of machines that are involved in synthesis of drugs, the processes and labeling of the products. They also utilize the optimized conditions for the manufacture of drugs.

Bio materials:

The field also includes the clinical practices associated with Biomaterials e.g. drug delivery systems and implantable medical devices etc. This is very crucial as well as sensitive area that comes under the umbrella of Pharmaceutical Engineering.

Chemical Engineering Research & Development:

Pharmaceutical Engineers are expert in organic chemistry. They utilize the advanced separation techniques to recover synthetic organic compounds that are basically what Chemical Engineers do.

In addition to this, synthesis of new chemicals and the determination of the sub components that a specific compound contains is also a part of their job. They also monitor and evaluate new chemical processing technologies, while working with other process research and developmental areas of pharmacology.

Research facilities and Manufacturing plants:

Pharmaceutical engineers spend most of their time in research facilities and manufacturing plants. Their priority is to assure the quality and regulation. These processes are facilitated by them with Manufacturing practice Regulations of FDA. Moreover, environmental safety is also assured.

“Pharmaceutical engineers have a wide range of responsibilities that includes research, designs and planning for the synthesis of pharmaceutical products and other therapies.”

How to be a pharmaceutical Engineer:

The degree of Pharmaceutical Engineering is awarded by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE). Having pre exquisites Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics and Basic Chemical Engineering. Moreover, Physiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Basic Chemical Engineering, Biomaterials, Organic Chemistry, Bio machines, Bio pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical biology, Pharmacology , Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology
Social Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy etc. are also required with feasible grip in these areas.

Salary of Pharmaceutical Engineer:

The average salary of Pharmaceutical Engineer is $97940 per annum which varies from market to market and region to region you are working in. It also depends on what type of additional skills and experience you have.
