Many who stand against the belief in Christ's divinity bring up the fact that Jesus told the people that the Father is Greater than him. After all, how can he be God if God is suppose to be greater than ALL? Let us see what Jesus REALLY meant.
The first thing we have to understand is that the word greater does not always have to mean in essence or nature. As a matter of fact,even the gospel writers used the word greater in different ways. For example:
Luke 22:27
"For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth."What we see is that the word greater can also mean IN RANK or POSITION. For example, your boss is greater than you. Does this mean that your boss is of a greater essence or nature? NO. This is because you and him are both human. But what it DOES mean is in position.
Furthermore, if these individuals are to be consistent and limit their definition of greater to mean in nature, then Jesus cannot be merely a prophet because in luke 11:31-32 Jesus says that he is GREATER than them hence their argument falls apart either way.
So to conclude this post, the definition of the word GREATER should not be limited to nature, but can ALSO mean in position/rank. This is so because Christ, as we know, gave up some of his glory in John 17:5 to take the form of a servant to serve as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus took the form of a man and came TO EARTH and the Father is IN HEAVEN. The father was GREATER in position/rank.
