Did Jesus and the disciples speak Greek?

Tags: greek

Although the main language spoken by Christ was either Aramaic or Hebrew, many are quick to limit his spoken languages to these 2 and these 2 only. Such false conclusions have given rise to the disbelief in the gospels seeing as these were originally written in Greek. These individuals say that since Christ and his disciples spoke Aramaic or Hebrew, then the originals must have been written in these languages as well hence the Greek format is not the true and authentic format.

We can go into a whole topic on how the common language of the Roman empire during the time of Christ was Greek, but instead I will prove to the reader that the probabilities of Christ and his disciples speaking Greek are higher than one might think. We will do this by using the bible itself.

The people in that time and place spoke Greek.
1) Luke 23:38. When Jesus was crucified, notice that the sign above his head saying "king of the Jews" was written in Greek, Latin and Hebrew. The question we need to ask ourselves is the following: If the tongues spoken in Israel were only limited to the Hebrew language, then why would the sign be written in latin and greek as well? Herein is the evidence that the people of that place and time were also quite familiar with these 2 tongues as well. It is also important to notice that in both Luke and John, the sign is written in Greek FIRST and THEN in Latin and Hebrew. Greek may have been more common than we thought.

The disciples spoke Greek.
2) John 12:20.  In this event, we see that some GREEKS came to Philip desiring to speak to the messiah. Now there is NO indication that this communication happened in the Hebrew tongue. In fact, the gospels mentioning the nationality of these individuals is probably emphasizing the fact that this communication did in fact happen in the Greek language. Herein is the proof that the disciples most probably were familiar with the Greek language in order for Philip to communicate with these individuals.

Jesus spoke Greek
3) Mark 7:26. In this passage, there is a woman who came to Jesus wanting him to cast out a devil which lay within her daughter. However, Mark made it clear that this lady was in fact a Greek. Is it then beyond the walls of possibility that Jesus knew some form of Greek in order to communicate with her?
