Union Public Service Commission CSE: The Tie Breaking Rule

Union Public Service Commission CSE: The Tie-Breaking Rule? The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Tie-breaking rules for its various exams. It is important to understand these rules to avoid confusion when UPSC selects another candidate with the same score as you.

What is a Tie-breaking rule?

A Tie-breaking rule is only applied when at least two candidates have the same score. It determines which candidate will be selected when the number of candidates with the same score exceeds the number of available spots.

It is crucial to note that the Tie-breaking rules do not apply to candidates who score higher than the cut-off. They are only applicable in cases where there are multiple candidates with the same score, and only for the minimum cut-off score.

Why does UPSC use Tie-breaking rules?

UPSC has released revised Tie-breaking rules for its exams. These rules will be effective for exams and recruitments notified after August 28, 2019, as approved by UPSC.

The following exams are included under the revised rules: Engineering Services Exam, Combined Geo-Scientist Exam, Combined Defence Services Exam, National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Exams, and Civil Services Exam (IAS).

Most reputable organizations have their own Tie-breaking rules to determine the merit among candidates with the same score. As a government body, UPSC also uses these rules based on scores, age, and other factors.

How does the Union Public Service Commission CSE Tie Breaking Rule function?

UPSC Tie-breaking rules first filter candidates based on their scores and then consider their age. It is important to note that UPSC is responsible for the recruitment of various services such as IAS, IFS, IPS, and other Central Services.

Conditions for Union Public Service Commission CSE Tie Breaking Rule:

– Prelims scores are not considered in the final rank declaration for the Civil Services Exam. Prelims is a qualifying exam.
– If multiple candidates have the same aggregate marks, those with higher scores in the Compulsory or Common Papers, added to their Interview scores, will be ranked higher.
– If the total marks are still identical, candidates will be ranked based on their age, with the older candidate ranked higher.

Until 2018, UPSC also used the candidate’s score in compulsory papers as an additional filter if the previous criteria failed. However, this filter has been excluded from the revised Tie-breaking rules announced on February 26th.
