Indian Army Ranking Order & Designations

The Indian Army consists of six operational commands and a Training Command which is headed by Lieutenant General. The List of the Operational Generals are as follows.

Supporting Arms consists of Artillery, Engineers, Army Air Defense, Army Aviation Corps and Signals. The Services is constituted of Army Service Corps like Road, Transportation and Clerks, Army Medical Corps, Army Ordnance Corps like armament, ammunition, vehicles clothing and all equipment, Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers for repairs and recovery, Remounted veterinary Corps and the Intelligence Corps.

The Non Commissioned Officers ranks from Sepoy or Jawan, Lance Naik, Naik and Havildar. The designation of the Junior Commanders in ascending order is Subedar, Subedar Major and Naib Subedar.

The Ranking Structure of the Commanders in ascending order is Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, Lieutenant General and General. The Highest Rank in Army is Field Marshal while the lowest rank in Army is Sepoy or Jawan.

The Organization of Command is clearly mentioned here. A Section consists of 10 to 12 men. 4 Sections are headed by a Platoon, 4 Platoons are headed by a Company. The Battalions are headed by a Colonel, while Brigadiers are headed by a Brigadier. The Divisions are headed by Major General and Corps are headed by Lieutenant General. The First General of India is Lt. General Cariappa.

TGC ( Technical Graduate Course ):

TGC Entry is for Permanent Commission. The Engineering candidates who are interested to join Indian Army can opt for this Scheme. This Technical Graduate Course, TGC is conducted twice every year. The Engineering candidates are shortlisted based on their percentage till their VI Semester. This TGC is only for male candidates. The candidate who is qualified in the Interview of the TGC entry can join the Military Academy of India for training. We will also provide you the Eligibility Criteria for this TGC below.

Entry Technical Entry.
Educational Qualification The candidates should have completed their Engineering Graduation in the stream as specified in the Notification
Age Limit 21 years to 26 years ( The Age limit mentioned in the Latest Official Notification should be considered ).
TGC Cut off Marks 70% – 75% ( The Percentage which is specified in the Latest Notification should be considered ).
Duration of Training Duration is 1 year in the Indian Military Academy.
Selection Method There will be no Written examination. The candidates are shortlisted on the basis of Percentage in their Engineering.

SSC Technical:

This entry is for the Short Service Commission. This SSC Tech Entry will be conducted 2 two times every year. Both Male candidates as well as Female candidates can apply for the Short Selection Commission ( SSC ) Tech Entry. The Educational Qualifications, Age Limit, Mode of Applying, Selection Method and various other details are given below.

Entry Technical Entry.
Educational Qualification The candidates who have done their Engineering Graduation in the stream as prescribed in the Notification.
Age Limit 21 years to 26 years as per the official notification.
SSC Tech Cutoff Marks 70% to 75% as per the Lastest Official Notification (This may vary depending on the gender of the candidates)
Duration of Training 1 year in the Officers Training Academy, Gaya.
Selection Method The candidates are shortlisted based on the percentage in their Engineering.
How to Apply The Mode of application is Online mode. The Official Website of Indian Army is joinindianarmy.nic.in.

CDS ( Combined Defense Service ) Exam:

CDS Exam is a Non Technical Entry Examination. The CDS Exam is conducted for the Engineering candidates. This CDS Exam is conducted by UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission ). This Exam is conducted twice every year. There is no percentage limit for this attending this exam. Please see the Official Notification for more details.

NCC Special Entry :

The NCC Entry is a Non Technical Entry. The Engineering candidates who possess NCC ‘ C ‘ Certificate can apply when the notification is released. For more details, see the Official Notification.

Territorial Army: 

The Territorial Army is a Non Technical Entry. The candidates who have completed their Engineering and got employed will be eligible for this Entry. You can read the Official Notification for more details.

NDA ( National Defense Academy ) Exam:

One of the best way to join Indian Army after +2 is through NDA Exam. NDA refer to National Defense Academy. NDA exam is an entrance exam to join Indian Defense Forces like Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. So, the candidates who have passed their 10 + 2 or Intermediate with Maths & Physics or without Maths & Physics. The candidates with or without mathematics in their 10 + 2 should answer the Paper of Mathematics with General Ability in the NDA Exam. NDA ( National Defense Academy ) Exam is conducted twice every year. The exams are called NDA I Exam and NDA II Exam. Medical candidates who want to become officers can also apply for this Exam.

Army Medical Corps (AMC):

The Army Corps render medical services to all the army people. They are the specialist corps in the Army. These Medical Corps are recruited as SSC Officer ( Short Service Commission Officer ).

Educational Qualifications The candidates should have completed their Post Graduation such as MD or MS or MCh ( OR ) Diploma holders like DM or DNB or DOMS or DLO or DA.
Age Limit Below 45 years.
Selection Method The candidates are selected through Written examination, medical Examination, Medical Standards, Medical Test and an Interview conducted by SSC ( Short Service Commission ) or Premanent Commission.
Mode of Application  Online Mode.

The candidates who are interested to get recruited as Army Medical Corps have knowledge on the Selection Process. Initially, there are two ways to get recruited as Army Corps. One way is through Short Service Commission and the second one is through the Permanent Commission.

Army Medical Corps – Short Service Commission ( SSC ): SSC, the Short Service Commission releases Notification for recruitment of the candidates as SSC Officers once in every year. The candidates who are eligible will be called for the Interview. The Interview will be held at New Delhi. In the Interview the SSC will assess the merit of the candidates and select the candidates. The candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of the Results in the Interview. The Shortlisted candidates should undergo medical examination which is designated at Armed Forces Hospital, New Delhi.

Army Medical Corps – Permanent Commission: The SSC Officers can attend Interviews ( Departmental Interviews ) to get recruited in the Permanent Commission. Short Service Commission Officers should note that they can appear the Departmental Interviews only after completion of 2 Years of SSC Service. They should also make sure that there is no break in the service. The Age Limit for various Educational Qualifications are as follows.

Educational Qualification. Age Limit.
Post Graduation ( MD or MS ) Below 35 Years.
Post Graduation Diploma Below 32 Years.
MBBS  Below 31 Years.

Army Dental Corps ( ADC ):

The Selection is done through Permanent Commission. The candidates who have completed their Graduation in Dental Science ( BDS ) with minimum 60 % marks in their Final Year or the candidates who have passed their MDS from a recognized University or College ( OR ) The candidates who have done their 1 year Rotary internship which is recognized by the Dental Council of India ( OR ) The candidates who have possessed the Permanent Dental registration Certificate are eligible to become Army Dental Corps. The Upper age limit in case of BDS candidates is 28 years; in case of MDS candidates is 30 years. The Selection Method includes an Interview.

Educational Qualifications BDS with 60 % marks or MDS ( OR ) should have done 1 year Rotary Internship ( OR ) should possess Permanent Dental Registration Certificate.
Age Limit BDS – Below 28 Years

MDS – Below 30 Years
