A Simple Act of Awareness Saves Life – Impact of Defensive Driving

Vehicular accidental facts

Though Automobile technology is improved by leaps and bound in terms of implementing safety, because of human error the statistics of the vehicular accident is piling up.  It’s sad that, Vehicular accident happens every second in a day.  The worldwide statistics shows, about 1.3 million Vehicular deaths/year and approximately 3,287 deaths per day. In India around 400 people die in road accidents/day.  It’s more shocking, that about 36% of work related fatalities are also associated with motor vehicles. India accounts for one-fifth of global deaths due to road accidents, with over 20 million hospitalized each year.

Who is to blame?

Better safe than sorry

Although the driver is licensed, he doesn’t understand the responsibilities of driving a school bus. His ignorance had created huge risk to innocent lives. 90% of the road crashes are mainly due to driver’s behaviors & unsafe practices. The driver needs to be aware of his own capabilities and their limitations. Rather than the practical skills and knowledge, the driver’s awareness about their behavior (self-awareness), attitudes, thinking and perceptions also plays important role in avoiding devasting road causalities.

What could be the alternative? Is Self-Driving cars?

The current automotive technology has introduced Self Driving cars, which doesn’t want the driver’s involvement. The software installed in the autonomous cars recognizes, predicts the vehicles and pedestrian movement priorly through LIDAR (Light Intensity Distance and Ranging), RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging) and Global Positioning System. These systems provides complete control over the vehicles, manage speed and maintain the steering control; hence helps in providing safe driving and crash avoidance technology. Although there are pros and cons in introducing autonomous vehicle on road, the entire automotive industries is looking forward to launch.

How could we reduce the current accidental rate?

By providing awareness and knowledge on Defensive Driving.

Defensive driving helps the driver to avoid getting himself, his passengers, and his vehicle into hazardous situation or staying away from other motorist, vehicles or pedestrians. It helps to reduce the risk by anticipating the situation and making well informed solutions for the risk. Moreover the defensive driving also insists the following;

  • Smart Driving
  • Traffic Management
  • Avoid accidental situations – Risk Management
  • Managing Psychological Condition (Mental State)
  • To avoid Over Speeding
  • To anticipate the hazards (Foresights)
  • Familiarity with vehicles in terms of controls and capabilities
  • Create safe environment in and out of the vehicles
  • To deal with emergency situations

NIST offers bespoke Defensive driving training to corporates, which provides knowledge and skills to anticipate the dangerous events & avoid the catastrophic accidents. The knowledge gained through this training will enable the driver to control fear, make snap decision and provides emergency care and safety. Every choice has a consequence, choose (learn) wisely to save lives!!!
