Understanding Exposure

Bryan Peterson

My History with Photography

For a while, I was really into Photography. I had a photography blog and spend much time taking studio shots. Working in a controlled setting was nice and all, but when it came to the kids, I was lost. The sun scared me as did moving from one room to the next. As soon as I got my metering right, something changed. Since I was unsure of where to start, I let my images get the best of me and sadly, my fear really hurt my photography skills. Needless to say, I was just not sure to get a fast metering. After reading Understanding Exposure, I have a new sence of hope. My photography, both on this blog and in my personal life will take a huge turn for the better.

About Understanding Exposure

The first part of the book that got my attention was how easy exposure really is. Once you read about aperture, shutter speed and F stop, the rest makes sence. Since I started off with the introduction, I not only was able to face my fears, but I moved forward in the right direction.

In my mind, photography is all about painting with light. The key is to get the right light, and you are good to go. Understanding Exposure, not only helps the reader with light issues, and difficulties, but the book takes it slow, is very informative and is filled with amazing photographs to help the reader perfect lighting skills.

My Tip

If you are both a mother, father, or photographer reading Understanding Exposure, I would suggest you take your time with this book. Read the book sill by skill or page by page if you must. After you read about a new skill or technique, take a few days to practice it. Try breaking a few of the rules and check out your results. The more time and energy you spend on your photographs, the better your results will be.

My Overall Opinion

At the end of the day, if you own any camera, no matter how high-end it is Understanding Exposure is a must read. I am not only gaining my confidence back when it comes to photography, but I feel like I am understanding my camera more. A few adjustments with the camera and my family photographs are looking a whole lot better.

What camera do you use for your family photographs?
