Holy Squawkamole! Book Review and Giveaway
Book Summary
The book Holy Squawkamole! is a cute take on The Little Red Hen. In this version, the Hen is on a mission to make some yummy guacamole. She asks some local animals for help, but true to the book, they all say no. They are busy doing other things in the moment and have no time to help her at all. When she finally has all of the ingredients, she asks again for help but no one is available to help out. However, when it is time for eating everyone has time to come and eat with her.
Pros:
I found Holy Squawkamole! to be a fun take on an old classic. I enjoy eating guacamole so this was a fun take on the story. From an art perspective, this illustrations were a lot of fun and the children love the beautiful colors.
Cons:
The main issue I had with Holy Squawkamole! was the ending. When I read a book to a child, I like it to have some sort of learning opportunity. The book ended off with the hen adding a hot pepper to the dish and everyone figuring out a way to enjoy it.
- From the hen’s perspective, I found this to be deceitful. She did not have to share considering all of the effort she put in the dish with no help. However, since she did choose to share the dish, she should have warned the other animals about the added heat.
- I was not happy she ended up sharing the guacamole. In a way, this showed the children that you do not have to work hard and you will still get what you want.
My Overall Opinion:
Ending aside, I thought most of Holy Squawkamole! was adorable. The book took a fun tale and put a nice twist on it. The story moved at a nice pace, was filled with fun illustrations, and a great overall story line.
