Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Sharks is a great book. Written for children who put on a brave face in this big confusing world.

Sam Wu is not Afraid of Sharks

Summary

Sam Wu is not afraid of anything. He especially is not afraid of sharks, or so he wanted everyone to think. When he was invited to a birthday party, he knew something needed to be done. Sam Wu tried very hard to put up a tough front. He had a sidekick snake, became a ghost hunter, and put up a tough front for his peers. Try as he may, a few of his classmates felt he was scared. This only got worse when he was invited to a beach party.

Sam Wu was afraid of sharks but did not want to admit it. Rather then pretending to be brave, Sam Wu did his best to come up with excuses not to attend. However, after coming up with many plans, he realized he had no choice but to attend the party.

Activity

In Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Sharks, the reader can learn a lesson or two about bravery. I would do a small writing assignment. Have your student write of a time their fears have held them back from doing something. End the assignment off with an idea or strategy on how to overcome the fear.

For example, a student is afraid of swimming. Their fear is so big, they refused to attend their best friends party in a water park. While going to the water park may seem like a huge fear to overcome fast, maybe standing in a wading pool might be an option. Once comfortable, sitting on the side of a community pool and trying to place feet in water. A few small steps will lead to future waterpark fun.

Bottom Line

While Sam Wu might be over the top in his worries and fears, I think this book can relate to many children. He talks about excuses and worries that are holding him back. In the end of Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Sharks, the reader realizes how brave Sam Wu really is. I think this fun book is the perfect read for 8-10 year old’s.
