Haas Adds Online MBA Option

If you’re looking to embrace the convenience of virtual learning, good news: so is University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business

This week, the school announced

With the new MBA option, students can earn their degree through fully remote course work, or they can choose to take a mixture of online and in-person classes.

In particular, the first three semesters of core MBA courses will be online for all students. After that, students can stay online for their elective courses, or they can opt to attend classes on Berkeley’s campus.

Overall, the program lasts about three years although Haas said some students could get their degrees within two-and-a-half years.

Besides coursework, the program includes five in-person “immersion events,” of which three are required and two are optional.

These events are typically held on weekends and include an orientation, weekend-long communication courses, and a celebration at the end of the program.

The program’s online coursework will consist of a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Live courses will be held from 4-6 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays while prerecorded materials can be accessed according to students’ preferred schedules.

Haas expects the split between synchronous and asynchronous coursework to be approximately 50-50. Students will also be grouped into small “study teams” to facilitate interaction and discussion.

Ann Harrison, Haas’s dean, noted that the new online option would give students a flexible way to access Haas’s MBA program: “Students in the Flex cohort can get a top-ranked Berkeley Haas MBA from anywhere, without the commute to campus every week.”

Overseeing the new option is Haas’s assistant dean of MBA programs for working professionals, who explained that “the creation of this new Flex cohort reflects our commitment to innovation and UC Berkeley’s mission.”

Applications for the “Flex option” open on August 16, with the goal of enrolling about 60 students in July 2022.
