Ross’s MBA Class of 2022 Profile Is Out

The University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business has released a profile of its latest full-time MBA cohort.

It’s released some qualitative information

What about the numbers, though?

As far as the numbers, Ross’s crop of 358 new MBA students is a respectable bunch. They bring an average GMAT of 710 and an average GPA of 3.5. They also average 5.3 years of work experience.

Most commonly, that experience comes in consulting or finance, which account for 22 and 13 percent of the Class respectively. Ten percent join Ross from the tech sector and 9 percent from healthcare.

Forty-three percent of Ross’s Class of 2022 are women. Of those from the US, 36 percent are students of color. The 18 percent who are international students represent 28 countries – including, for the first time Ross notes, Andorra.

In terms of standardized testing, 80 percent of GMAT takers fell somewhere in the 660-750 range. For both quantitative and verbal GRE scores, the 80 percent range was 153-167.

While those numbers are still in line with expectations for a top business school, Poets & Quants points out that Ross actually saw its average GMAT drop with the latest class while the acceptance rate shot up from 31 to 37 percent. The reason for those changes appears to be a decline in applications.

“We expect that this is a Covid blip,” Soojin Kwon, Ross’s managing director for full-time MBA admissions, told Poets & Quants.

Kwon explained that “we were among the handful of schools that offered international students the option to defer,” which created “a domino effect caused by admitted students at other schools choosing not to enroll, and opening up spots for applicants who may not have been admitted in previous years.”

Indeed, Ross did extend a deferral option to its international students in June. Of course, that raises some questions about what will happen to admissions numbers in coming years when those who deferred choose to begin their studies.

For current applicants navigating an increasingly uncertain world of MBA admissions, the key is to turn in the strongest application possible – one that highlights your unique personal brand.
