Mechanism OF Labor PPT: Definition, Requirements and Rights Free Download: Normal labor is a set of processes that occur in the genital organ to allow the birth of a viable fetus at term, followed by the ejection of the placenta and membrane from the vagina.

Normal labor is defined by the World Health Organization as beginning spontaneously at term (37 full weeks of gestation) for a fetus with cephalic presentation, proceeding without maternal or fetal difficulty, and culminating in the delivery of the fetus, placenta, and membranes.

The placenta converts fetal dehyroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) to estriol and estradiol. This stimulates oxytocin receptors in the myometrium, lowers the progesterone/estrogen ratio, and increases myometrial gap junctions, allowing for easier uterine contractions. Labor is also connected with an increase in prostaglandin synthesis in the placenta and cervix, which further activates their receptors and facilitates cervical ripening (PGE2) and uterine contractions.
