How to Obtain a Work Permit While In High School

A California Student’s Guide to Obtaining a Work Permit

Millions of minors are employed each year in the United States. If you’re a student under 18 looking to secure a part-time job while enrolled at California Pacific Charter Schools (CalPac), understanding the federal and state laws governing minors’ employment and the school’s Work Permit Policy is essential.

What is a Work Permit?

Minors employed in California must have a Permit to Employ and Work (commonly referred to as a “work permit”). Work permits are typically issued by the school where the student is enrolled. Work permits indicate the duties and location of the work and the number of hours a minor may work. Securing a work permit is a two-step process. The minor, parent/guardian, and employer fill out the Statement of Intent to Employ a Minor and Request for a Work Permit-Certificate of Age, CDE Form B1-1, and submit to the school where the student attends. The school reviews the B1-1 form and issues the B1-4 (Work Permit).

How to Obtain a Work Permit
Ensure You Meet CalPac’s Work Permit Requirements

To be eligible for a work permit at CalPac, you must:

  • Have a  minimum 2.0 GPA based on your prior semester’s grades.
  • Be passing all current coursework in progress.
  • Have no excessive absences (absences include any day when a student does not log in and complete work).
  • Be making adequate progress toward graduation.
Download and Complete the Work Permit Application (CDE Form B1-1)

You can access the Work Permit Application (CDE Form B1-1) at the link below or through your CalPac student portal.  The parent, student, and employer sections must be completed before submission. Only complete applications will be processed.

Submit the Completed Work Permit Application

Applications may be submitted in person, by appointment, or by mail to the following address:

California Pacific Charter Schools

Attn: Work Permit Coordinator

940 South Coast Drive, Suite 185

Costa Mesa, CA 92626

Submitted applications must be original (no photocopies) with wet signatures. Electronic submission of the Work Permit Application (CDE Form B1-1) is prohibited per California Labor Law.

Wait for Processing

After submitting your application, please allow up to 5 working days for CalPac to process the work permit (CDE Form B1-4). During this period, watch your email or other communication channels for updates. Once processed, you will receive an electronic version of the permit to your student email, and the original copy will be mailed to the home address on file.

Reapply Annually and When Changing Employers

Work permits need to be renewed annually. Be aware of your permit’s expiration date, and submit the renewal in advance to allow for processing time and ensure there is no lapse. You must also reapply for a new work permit if you change employers.

Maintaining Your Work Permit

Students must remain in good academic standing while employed. In the event you fall below the school minimum requirements, you will be given a probationary warning. The Program Director or a school administrator may revoke your work permit if you don’t make progress following a probationary warning.

Work Hours and Balancing Academics

CalPac students are expected to comply with the state labor laws governing minors’ work hours. It’s essential to note that your work schedule may not interfere with your school activities, including live class sessions, homeroom meetings, and proctored testing.

CalPac students are advised to work no more than 24 hours per week to ensure they can focus adequately on their academic performance. While part-time work can be valuable, your academic success remains the primary goal at CalPac.
