Exploring Northern California in the Summertime

Summer break is here, and it’s the perfect time for students and their families to enjoy local adventures! California Pacific Charter Schools is an online public school that serves 15 counties across the state of California.  

We wanted to kick off the break by sharing some ideas for summer fun! We’ve already given you some great ideas for the Los Angeles and San Diego area, so last but certainly not least, let’s highlight our Northern California scope! California Pacific Charter Schools Sonoma serves Sonoma County, Mendocino County, Lake County, Napa County, Solano County, Contra Costa County, and Marin County. Numerous family-friendly activities and destinations are waiting to be explored, so let’s get into it!

Sonoma County:

Take advantage of the stunning nature in the area with a visit to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve in Guerneville, where you can marvel at the towering ancient redwood trees. The reserve spans over 800 acres and offers Visitors the opportunity to explore groves of majestic coastal redwoods, some of which are more than 1,400 years old and reach heights of over 300 feet. The park features several hiking trails that wind through the redwood forest, providing a tranquil and immersive experience in nature. 

For a wild experience, embark on a thrilling African safari adventure at Safari West in Santa Rosa. The preserve spans over 400 acres and is home to over 900 animals from more than 90 species, including giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, rhinos, and many others. Visitors can embark on guided jeep tours led by experienced naturalists who provide informative commentary about the animals and their habitats.

Don’t forget to explore the historic town of Sonoma, where you can visit the Sonoma TrainTown Railroad. The park features a miniature railroad with scaled-down steam trains that take passengers on scenic rides through the beautiful countryside. It’s a great way to enjoy the charm of a classic train ride. In addition to the train rides, TrainTown offers various attractions, such as a carousel, a Ferris wheel, and a petting zoo, where visitors can interact with friendly animals.

Mendocino County:

Explore Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, where colorful sea glass pebbles create a treasure trove for beachcombing. The beach was a dumping site for glass bottles and other discarded items, but over time, the pounding waves and natural processes have transformed the glass into smooth, polished pebbles, creating a stunning mosaic of sea glass in various hues. It offers a visually captivating and environmentally fascinating experience, showcasing the beauty of nature’s ability to transform man-made waste into something beautiful.

 Take a ride on the Skunk Train in Willits, a historic railway that offers scenic rides through the majestic redwood forests of Mendocino County, providing passengers with a nostalgic journey back in time. The train traverses along the Pudding Creek Estuary and Noyo River, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. The ride is an opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of towering trees, lush greenery, and serene waterways while learning about the region’s history and railroad heritage.

In addition to its natural beauty, Mendocino County is also home to unique cultural experiences. Visit the Mendocino Art Center, which offers a range of art workshops and classes for all skill levels, allowing visitors to engage in hands-on artistic activities such as painting, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry-making, and more. The center also hosts exhibitions and galleries that showcase the works of local and visiting artists, providing a platform for artistic appreciation and inspiration.

Lake County:

Start your adventure at Clear Lake State Park, home to California’s largest freshwater lake. The park offers a range of recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, and picnicking. Visitors can enjoy the sparkling waters of Clear Lake or head to the hiking trails that wind through oak woodlands and provide scenic viewpoints. Additionally, there are opportunities for wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and camping. 

Visit Lakeport’s Library Park, located in the city of Lakeport, situated on the western shore of Clear Lake. It is a charming park that offers a variety of amenities and recreational opportunities. The park features a playground area for children, picnic areas for families and groups, and a beautiful sandy beach where visitors can relax and soak up the sun. The beach provides access to Clear Lake and allows for swimming and water activities, offering a playground, picnic areas, and a beautiful beach. 

Explore the fascinating Anderson Marsh State Historic Park. The park encompasses a diverse habitats, including wetlands, meadows, and woodlands. It offers opportunities for guided nature walks, birdwatching, and educational programs highlighting the park’s rich history and natural resources. After a hike, take some time to explore the lake’s hidden coves and serene beauty while enjoying a refreshing dip in the water!

Napa County:

Begin with a visit to the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art renowned art center that showcases contemporary artworks amidst beautiful surroundings. The center is situated on a sprawling estate that spans over 200 acres and features both indoor and outdoor exhibitions. Visitors can explore a diverse collection of contemporary art, including sculptures, paintings, installations, and more. 

Next, take a leisurely bike ride along the Napa Valley Vine Trail, a scenic trail stretching approximately 47 miles throughout Napa Valley. The trail is divided into several sections, each offering its own charm and beauty. Along the way, visitors can explore charming towns, visit wineries, and stop at various points of interest.

Conclude your visit with a family-friendly winery tour, where adults can sample Napa’s world-class wines while younger visitors enjoy grape juice tastings! These tours often provide educational insights into the winemaking process, vineyard cultivation, and the unique characteristics of Napa Valley wines. You can even join in on a grape-stomping experience at a local winery. Learn about the winemaking process firsthand, and have fun getting your feet dirty!

Solano County:

Start off at Rockville Hills Regional Park in Fairfield, featuring hiking trails and serene lakes. Notably, Rockville Hills Regional Park is known for its accessible playground, designed to accommodate children of all abilities, making it an inclusive and welcoming space for families.

​​The Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield is a popular attraction that offers a delightful experience for candy enthusiasts. Visitors can take a guided tour of the factory to learn about the jelly bean-making process, from creating the flavors to the packaging. The interactive tour allows visitors to witness the production line, see giant jelly bean art displays, and even sample different flavors. 

Consider attending a family-friendly performance at the Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre! It is a venue that hosts a variety of family-friendly performances, including live theater, music concerts, and dance shows. Throughout the summer, visitors can enjoy a diverse range of performances, from plays and musicals to concerts by local and touring artists.

Contra Costa County:

Explore the Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Walnut Creek, an interactive museum where children can learn about and interact with wildlife species. It offers visitors, especially children, a unique opportunity to learn about and interact with wildlife species. The museum features educational exhibits, live animal presentations, and hands-on activities that teach visitors the importance of wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship. 

Challenge yourselves to an outdoor adventure at Diablo Rock Gym in Concord, where you can try rock climbing and bouldering in a safe and supervised environment. The gym provides various climbing routes for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced climbers. Whether you’re a novice or an advanced climber, Diablo Rock Gym offers a range of challenges to suit your abilities. The facility is equipped with trained staff who provide instruction and guidance, ensuring a fun and rewarding climbing experience. It’s a fantastic place to challenge yourself, improve your climbing skills, and enjoy a thrilling outdoor adventure indoors. 

Cool off on a hot day by visiting Aqua Adventure Waterpark in Pleasanton, a popular destination for families seeking relief from the summer heat. The waterpark offers a variety of thrilling water slides, lazy rivers, splash pads, and other attractions suitable for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re looking for adrenaline-pumping rides or a relaxing float along the lazy river, Aqua Adventure Waterpark provides a fun and refreshing experience.

Marin County:

Start exploring at Muir Woods National Monument, located just north of San Francisco in Marin County. It is a breathtaking natural reserve known for its majestic coastal redwood trees. The park allows visitors to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of ancient redwoods, some of which are over 1,000 years old and reach heights of over 250 feet. Muir Woods offers a network of family-friendly trails that wind through the peaceful forest, immersing visitors in the serene ambiance and marveling at the towering trees.

Visit the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito, a hands-on museum with engaging exhibits for children of all ages. The museum offers various engaging exhibits that encourage interactive learning and exploration. Children can participate in activities that stimulate creativity, problem-solving, and scientific discovery. The museum features exhibits related to art, science, engineering, and the environment, providing a stimulating and educational experience. 

Enjoy a day at Stinson Beach, known for its pristine shoreline and scenic coastal views. The beach offers a vast expanse of sandy shoreline, making it ideal for leisurely walks, sunbathing, picnicking, and beachcombing. The surrounding coastal landscape provides scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and rolling hills. Stinson Beach is also a popular for various water activities such as swimming, surfing, and boogie boarding.
