Exploring San Diego in the Summertime

A Guide for Online Students in the SD Area

Summer break is here, and it’s the perfect time for students and their families to enjoy local adventures! California Pacific Charter Schools is an online public school that serves 15 counties across the state of California.  

We shared some great ideas for summer fun in the Los Angeles Area, so now let’s move on to our San Diego scope! California Pacific Charter Schools San Diego serves Orange County, Riverside County, Imperial County, and San Diego County.  Numerous family-friendly activities and destinations are waiting to be explored, so let’s get into it! 

Orange County:

Orange County offers various activities catering to families of all ages. Kickstart your journey in Huntington Beach, fondly known as Surf City USA, where little ones can build sandcastles, fly kites, and maybe even try and catch some waves! Just south of Huntington, you can make a stop at Balboa Island where you can grab a frozen banana, stroll through local shops, and then catch a ferry ride over to the Balboa Fun Zone for some classic arcade games.

Interested in some educational fun? Explore the captivating world of marine life at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, where rescued seals and sea lions are rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Another great spot to visit is the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, offering interactive marine exhibits and educational programs that provide a hands-on experience for the whole family. 

If you’re looking for some family-friendly thrills, Orange County has lots to offer! Head to Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, where fun rides, live entertainment, and delicious treats await.  Of course, you can also make your way out to Anaheim for a day of magic at one of the Disneyland theme parks!

Riverside County:

Riverside County is a combination of natural wonders and historic charm, perfect for family exploration. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert is an amazing place  can encounter fascinating desert wildlife and even partake in some amazing animal encounters liek feeding giraffes! 

For an educational experience, explore the Children’s Discovery Museum in Rancho Mirage, a vibrant space filled with interactive exhibits and educational activities designed to stimulate young minds and help them learn about htemsleves and the world around them. 

Looking for an outdoor adventure? The Riverside County Parks and Open-Space District offers numerous parks with playgrounds, picnic areas, and nature trails, providing ample opportunities for family hikes and outdoor picnics. You can also take a scenic hike through the stunning Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve in Murrieta, where you can witness breathtaking vistas, spot wildlife, and explore the diverse ecosystems that make this area unique.

Imperial County:

If you looking for museums start your Imperial County adventure at the Imperial Valley Desert Museum in Ocotillo, where you can learn about the region’s desert ecosystems, art and wildlife, and even participate in hands-on exhibits.  Wrap up your day with a visit to the Pioneers’ Park Museum in Imperial, which showcases the area’s pioneer history through interactive displays and artifacts.

Get ready for an outdoor adventure in Imperial County!  Take advantage of the opportunity to witness the otherworldly beauty of the Salton Sea, a vast inland saltwater lake known for its diverse bird population and striking sunsets. Another great stop is the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, largest mass of sand dunes in the state! Kids can enjoy sandboarding or the thrill of running down the dunes – some reach up to 300 feet!

San Diego County:

San Diego County is a treasure trove of family-friendly outdoor activities and attractions. If you’re looking to take in some history, begin with a trip to the USS Midway Museum, an aircraft carrier turned museum that offers self-guided audio tours and interactive exhibits, giving visitors a unique glimpse into naval history. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where you can explore the preserved historic buildings, enjoy live performances, and learn about the region’s rich cultural heritage is another great historic spot to explore.

For a taste of wildlife adventure, head to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, where you can experience a thrilling safari-like journey and encounter a wide array of animal species in their natural habitats. You can also explore the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, where families can marvel at a diverse range of marine life and learn about ocean conservation. 

If you’re looking for a theme park, spend a day at LEGOLAND California Resort in Carlsbad, where imagination comes to life with thrilling rides, LEGO-themed attractions, and a water park perfect for cooling off on hot summer days. End your day with a scenic drive to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, where you can embark on scenic hikes, explore picturesque beaches, and admire the majestic Torrey pine trees found only in this region.

So, grab your loved ones, embark on an exciting summer journey, and create cherished moments that will be remembered for years to come.
