Talking to Your Child About Their Progress Report

As an online Student, keeping track of your Progress is essential to your academic success. However, it can be challenging to know how to interpret and act on the information provided in progress reports. As a parent, it’s important to talk to your child about their progress to ensure they’re on track for success and understand the areas they need to work on.

With CalPac progress reports being sent out, we wanted to share some tips to help you have a productive conversation with your virtual student about their educational progress.

Explain the Importance of Progress Reports

Before diving into the details, explain to your child the importance of progress reports. Let them know that it’s an essential tool to track their academic progress and ensure they’re meeting their educational goals. They will show the things your student is excelling in and can help identify the areas in which your child may need more support.

Although progress reports can feel intimidating to your online student, let your child know that without them, they may not be able to get the help they need that could set them on track for academic success. This will help your child understand the significance of the report and be more engaged in the conversation.

Start the Conversation Positively

We understand that sometimes a conversation about your child’s grades isn’t always going to be easy, but starting off the conversation on a good note can make the harder parts go a little more smoothly.

Once you dive into the details of your student’s progress report, try to start the conversation positively! Acknowledge the areas they’re doing well in and praise their accomplishments. Not only will this help your child build self-esteem and confidence, but it will also make your child more receptive to the discussion and help them feel encouraged to improve in areas where they need to work harder.

Review the Report Together

Sometimes it can be tempting to go over the report on your own and then relay that information to your child, but this results in your child missing out on an opportunity to take ownership of their education. An online student tends to take on more personal responsibility when it comes to schooling. Go over their progress reports with them so that they can be fully aware of where they stand academically.

This will give you both a chance to understand the report’s format and contents. Ask your student plenty of questions while you are reviewing the report to make sure they are understanding and engaging in it.

Review their grades, attendance, and any comments from the teacher. Discuss why they might be struggling with a particular subject and brainstorm ways to help them improve. If they’re doing well in another subject, acknowledge their success and encourage them to keep up the good work!

Discuss Strategies for Improvement

Once you’ve identified the areas your student needs to work on, discuss strategies for improvement. Encourage your child to take ownership of their learning and come up with a plan to improve their performance. Help them set specific and measurable goals, and brainstorm ideas on how they can achieve those goals.

For example, if your child is struggling with math, work together to come up with a plan to improve. This might include practicing math problems every day, regularly attending Virtual Learning Hub, or asking the teacher for extra help. Encourage your child to set specific goals, such as improving their grade by a certain amount, and track their progress regularly.

Offer Support and Encouragement

Finally, it is incredibly important to offer your child support and encouragement throughout the process. Let them know that you believe in them and are there to help them succeed. Check in with your student regularly to see how they’re progressing and offer help and guidance as needed.

Talking to your online student about their progress report can be a constructive and productive experience. Starting the conversation positively, explaining the report’s importance, reviewing it together, discussing strategies for improvement, and offering support and encouragement can help your child become more engaged in their education and improve their academic performance. By working together, you can help your child reach their full potential and achieve academic success!

Here at CalPac, we understand how important parents and guardians are to their student’s learning process.  Support at home paired with the support of our dedicated online educators is the key to success for so many of our virtual TK-12 students.  Many of our CalPac teachers are parents to online students themselves!  Watch the video below to hear from Ms. Frank – a 6th-grade teacher at CalPac and a parent – on how she keeps her online student on track.
