Celebrating Black History Month

CalPac is honored to educate a diverse community of students.  We are dedicated to creating an equitable environment where education is accessible to all.  We proudly recognize and celebrate the contributions of the Black community and aim to lift up their stories among our student body and beyond.

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month is a time to celebrate African Americans’ achievements and contributions throughout history.  It recognizes the central role the Black community has played in the history of this country.

Black History Month began in 1915 when historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland began the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) – dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans.

In 1926, the ASALH sponsored Black History Week during the second week of February – coinciding with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas.  This week was a time for celebrating Black History through events, history clubs, performances, and lectures.

As decades past and Black History Week became more and more recognized, it eventually evolved in Black History Month.  President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month in 1967, calling it an “opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

This year’s theme focuses on Black resistance and how Black communities have fought for their freedoms and against all forms of racism and oppression. Through slavery, segregation, poverty, and the fight for equal rights, the Black community has stood strong and persevered.

Every day, the Black community continues to work diligently toward a brighter future for the next generations. This month, we will be learning together and sharing resources in honor of Black History Month.
