Teacher Highlight: Amy Evans

A Chat with Science Department Chair Amy Evans

California Pacific Charter Schools is lucky to have a a faculty full of talented and dedicated educators and Amy Evans is no exception.  The Science Department Chair has been with CalPac since 2009 – and during her time her she has supported countless online students in their educational journeys.

We spoke with Evans about her career in her education and she gave us some insight on how she got here, what drew her to online education, and what she hopes for the future:

What made you want to go into education?

“I actually was majoring in marine biology and planning on working on a boat collecting whale data for my career but I had an extra slot for a class during my last quarter of college so I took an Intro to Teaching course. This course required me to observe a local Middle School Science classroom and I fell in love instantly with the idea of sharing my passion for science with our youth!

I especially wanted to contribute to my own community so I moved back home after graduating, and applied for an emergency credential which allowed me to teach Middle School science while I earned my official teaching credential in the evenings and it has been the best decision I could have made!”

How long have you been in education?

24 Years!

How long have you been at CalPac?

I have been teaching at CalPac since 2009 (13 years).

What drew you to online education?

Although I loved teaching middle school science at Audubon Middle School, I was planning on starting a family and I wanted to be home to raise my son while teaching from home. This online teaching opportunity was presented to me the day I discovered I was pregnant!

What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?

Interacting with students whom I can share my passion for science with. I love getting students excited about learning about the world around us. I always put myself in the shoes of the student and aim to engage them in the learning process and encourage them to think like a scientist while believing in their own value and potential!

What do you feel has been your greatest achievement during your teaching career?

The number of students I am able to inspire each year specifically through the lab class I started at Audubon Middle School, the lab days at CalPac and now the virtual lab experiences through our curriculum today!

What is one thing you hope to see change in education?

Fully funded, high quality educational opportunities for students at all levels that does not rely on test scores to gauge achievement levels but that values all forms of assessments that represent the whole student.

Honoring Mrs. Evan's Dedication

We are honored to have amazing teachers at our school and we love to see them recognized for their hard work and commitment to enriching the lives of young people – which is why we were delighted to nominate Evans for the LA Clippers Teacher Appreciation Award which she received this past weekend!
