3 Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Feliz Mes de Herencia Hispana CalPac!

This month marks National Hispanic Heritage Month and CalPac wants to recognize and honor the diverse histories and backgrounds of members of our faculty and our families who are of hispanic heritage.

So, What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Every year, American’s observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th.  The month represents a celebration of the cultures, contributions, and rich histories of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Hispanic Heritage Month was first observed back in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, until it was expanded to cover a 30-day period in the late 1980’s.  The significance of the September 15th start date is that it falls on the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  Additionally, Mexico celebrates independence day on the 16th of September, and Chile celebrates its independence on the 18th of September.

In honor of the Hispanic members of our CalPac family, here are 3 ways that you can celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month:

Visit the Museum of Latin American Art - Virtually or In Person

The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) is located in Long Beach, California and is the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latino and Latin American art.  For CalPac online students local to the Long Beach area, visit their website to book a visit.  General admission cost is $15, with children under 12 getting in for free.  Additionally, MOLAA is free to the public every Sunday.

Not local to the Long Beach area?  No problem!  MOLAA offers virtual options through their program MOLAA en Casa.  Browse current online exhibits, watch MOLAA exhibition walkthroughs, and view videos of past exhibits from the comfort of your own home!  You can also watch interviews with MOLAA Chief Curator Gabriela Urtiaga and a number of Latin American and Latinx artists through their MOLAA Zoom Project.

Read a Book Regarding Hispanic Culture

Looking for some reading options that can help you and your family recognize Hispanic Heritage Month?  Look no further!  Readworks.org has created a curated list of excerpts and books available to users to honor the month that can be found here.

Every title on the list is available virtually, users can even listen to them as well!

Membership to Readworks is free to parents – simply sign up using this link.  After you fill out your information, a donation request will pop-up.  This is totally voluntary, if you do not wish to donate simply exit out of the pop-up to complete your registration.

Watch a Film Honoring Hispanic Heritage

Another great option for learning more about Hispanic Heritage Month is to watch a movie celebrating Latinx creators and stories!  Common Sense Media has compiled a list of 6 Family Friendly Films to Recognize Hispanic Heritage, which includes films like Coco, Underwater Dreams, Vivo, and more!  Look for the Common Sense age rating listed next to each film to see what works for your family!

You can also browse their picks for Movies that Feature South American Stories and Characters, Great Movies with Mexican and Mexican American Characters, and Binge-Worthy TV Shows for Hispanic Heritage Month.
