NWEA Testing – What It Is & Why It’s Important

The first round of Nwea Map Testing is here! From 8/30 to 9/2, CalPac students (mandatory for grades 2-11) will be taking their Measures of Academic Progress start of year assessments in English Language Arts, Reading, and Math. Information from these assessments helps us get to know our students so we can best encourage their strengths and fill in any gaps in learning that may have occurred in the past few years.

So, What is the NWEA MAP Test and Why Does It Matter?

The Nwea MAP Test (Measures of Academic Progress) is an assessment tool used to measure achievement and growth in math, reading, and language use. This test helps us as educators know where our students are at academically, and helps inform instructional strategies moving forward to ensure that your student can reach academic achievement. It is also an incredible way to track academic growth amongst our student population. Students will take the second round of the NWEA MAP test at the beginning of second semester meaning we will be able to see what areas they have grown in and where they still seem to be struggling. This gives us actionable evidence to make informed decision regarding our instructional strategies.

The In’s & Out’s of NWEA

Now that you have a general idea of what the NWEA MAP Test is, let’s break down exactly what the NWEA MAP –

  • Each test is between 43 questions and is adaptive.
    • They will take about 45 to 75 minutes to complete, if you need more than 75 minutes that is alright.
  • Testing is mandatory for students in grades 2-11 – opt outs are not allowed per assessment policy
    • K-1 is opting to test
    • 12th grade does not test
  • Your homeroom teacher is responsible for proctoring and arranging make-ups
    • If your student misses an assessment, contact your homeroom teacher ASAP to schedule a makeup
  • New students will be required to complete NWEA testing with a homeroom teacher
  • If you need a break, you can stop where you are at and take your break.
    • If you are gone longer than 25 minutes you will need to sign back in and I will need to unpause your test.

What are the NWEA MAP Testing Requirements?

CalPac students are to use their school issued Chromebook and the NWEA secure browser to complete their assessments. Parents should not offer any help other than helping their student get logged in, after that your student will need to complete the test on their own.

Be sure to prepare yourself, your space, and your devices for testing. Here some things you will need:

  • A quiet work space free from distractions
  • Scratch paper
  • Pen or pencil
  • Device charger
  • Headphones

Outside resources are not allowed during testing – any resources needed during testing will be located within the NWEA Testing platform.

Be sure to take your time! There is no need to rush from question to question, in fact if a student is rushing through the test they will be stopped for rapid guessing and will require a separate pin from their proctors to continue. This assessment is all about understanding student’s comprehension level, there is no pressure to rush through it and it is expected that you may not know every single answer. Take ample time on each question and allow yourself time to really think before you answer.

If you have any issues during testing, do not hesitate to reach out to your proctors via phone (email will be blocked on your Chrome Book during testing). They will troubleshoot any issues with you that you are unable to solve on your own!

What Happens After Testing?

Once NWEA MAP Test Scores are released, CalPac will be implementing our “Know Your Score” campaign, where we will share assessment scores and create a game plan for closing any gaps we may see. After you “Know Your Score” we will work with students to set academic goals for the upcoming school year. With their MAP test scores available to them, students and parents will be able to see the areas they are excelling in and focus on areas that could use some improvement. We will walk you through creating an action plan to make these academic goals achievable!

Good Luck!

You have got this CalPac! NWEA MAP Testing is a great tool for tracking student success and finding ways that we can best serve you as learners – we are excited to hear everyone’s result and see areas we can all grow in as a CalPac community!

If your child hasn’t completed NWEA testing, please contact their homeroom teacher to get it scheduled.  All students will receive a score report in early October.
