Back to School Tips & Tricks

Happy First Day of School CalPac! We’re so excited to kick off the 2022/2023 school year. We have some great things in store for this year, we cannot wait to share them with you all!

In preparation for this new year of school, we wanted to share some of our top tips and tricks to set you up for success! Attending a virtual school requires students to be very self motivated and very self sufficient.  It falls upon you as the student to ensure that you are staying on pace, completing all assignments, asking for help if you need it, attending live sessions, and completing your Learning log every day.

All of these activities are going to make you a successful student and keep you moving forward on your path toward graduation.  There are a number of reasons why each of the above activities which are important in your success in a virtual environment:

Make Your Thinking Space

Being an online student often means that you need to make the extra effort to create a focused and designated space for schooling wherever you will be logging into class from. Try setting up a focused learning area that you can designate for meetings and schoolwork – whether that is at a desk in your room, at the kitchen table, or wherever you may be! Try and make sure distractions and ambient noise are limited so that you are able to remain fully focused on your class work. Have pencils and paper at the ready!

Power Up!

Make sure to keep your brain, body and devices powered throughout your school day! Plan options for healthy meals and snacks that can you have throughout the day. Eating healthy meals and snacks throughout the day will keep your brain and body fully charged and focus so that you can you coursework your best efforts! Additionally, because we’re an online school, that means you are going to be using online devices during a big chunk of you day! This means you need to keep your devices fully charged so that you avoid any technical difficulties in the middle of class! Make sure to plan a time and place where you can keep your devices charged.

Asking for Help

Make sure you know your helpers!  If you are stuck or need help, have a contact handy to reach out to, whether it is a parent, learning coach or a Teacher.

If you are having trouble on any lesson- direct instruction, assignment or quiz it is very important that you ask your teacher for help.  If you have already gone back to review the material and have failed the test again, it is best that you ask for guidance.  Every teacher has office hours when he or she is available by phone, email or instant messaging.  Many teachers will meet with you in their classrooms to review assignments in person.

Ask for help as soon as possible; Your teacher may give you some excellent pointers which will help you be successful for the remainder of the year.  Remember to check your progress report regularly to make sure you are earning passing scores in each of your classes.  If you are not, reach out to your teachers to ask for help.

Attending Live Sessions

Live Sessions are a crucial part of your success in an online learning environment.  Live Sessions are where your teachers review the material you are learning in each of your classes.  Teachers will highlight important information for you to know.  They will also answer questions.  If you are shy about asking questions yourself, one of your peers may ask the same question you had, thus giving you the opportunity to hear the answer without asking.  Live Sessions also give you an opportunity to interact with your classmates.  Live Sessions are your best chance to build relationships with both your teachers and friends.

Completing Your Learning log

At California Pacific Charter School, learning logs are due to your homeroom teacher at the end of every week.  Learning Logs are not found in your courses.  They are emailed to you by your teacher at the beginning of every learning period.  It is up to you to save the logs to your computer and remember to fill them in each day with the activities you completed.  It is especially important that you are recording activities which are not completed on line in your e2020 courses.

For example, exercising for PE, reading chapters in a novel, doing research for a project or studying with a friend or family member.  The computer does not know that you did these things, so writing them in your log ensures that you are given proper credit and attendance for each day.

If you follow the guidelines above, you will increase your chances for being successful in online education enormously.  And remember, if you ever have any questions about how to do anything, be sure to reach out to your homeroom teachers.  They are you first point of contact and they are always there to help.  Here’s to a very successful school year for each of you!
