National – Across the India:

 

1. The Madhya Pradesh High Court has termed reservation in promotions in the state as unconstitutional.

 

Ruling in this regard was given by HC division bench chaired by Chief Justice A M Khanwilkar on the petitions filed several employee associations and social organizations.

Petitioners had challenged the rules of the state government which provided reservation in promotion for Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes.

2. The Union Government has launched National LED programme – Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA).

 

It was launched by Union Minister for State (IC) for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

The UJALA scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Union Ministry of Power.

 

3. Maharashtra Government has launched Adi Praman, a web-based application for state’s tribal population to get the caste validity certificates online.

 

It was launched along with portal named [email protected] by Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao.

The application is first of its kind for any state in India.

The app will make the entire process of securing caste validity certificate easy, fast and transparent and would effectively curb the menace of bogus certificates.

 

4. The Union Government launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for providing free of cost LPG (cooking gas) connections to women from BPL Households.

 

It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Maldepur Morh, Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.

The tagline for the scheme is Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan.

Under PMUY, each of the beneficiaries will receive monetary support of about 1,600 rupees to get a connection of cooking gas.

 

5. The Union Government launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) with an objective to provide free of cost LPG (cooking gas) connections to women from BPL Households.

 

It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Maldepur Morh, Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.

6. Andhra Pradesh Government has launched Chandranna Bima Yojana, an insurance scheme for the working class people.

 

The scheme was launched by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on the occasion of May Day in Vijayawada.

Main points of the scheme are:

Any insured worker who meets an accidental death and permanent disability will be paid 5 lakh rupees.

Any insured worker who suffers partial disability will be paid 3 lakh rupees.

This scheme will cover about 1.5 crore workers of the state.

 

7. The Supreme Court on Tuesday affirmed that a “floor test is the ultimate test” to decide who is in power, and asked the Centre to consider having a trust vote in the Uttarakhand Assembly to determine whether the Harish Rawat-led Congress government has a majority.

 

A Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh called the Uttarakhand case out-of-turn in the morning and asked Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi to seek instructions from the government on the court’s suggestion to have a floor test immediately, to end the constitutional impasse.

The court said it would temporarily suspend President’s Rule to facilitate the floor test.

 

8. The Union Cabinet has given its approval for adoption of United Nations Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics.

 

Decision in this regard was taken by the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The adoption of the UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics will bring professional independence, accountability, impartiality and transparency in methods of collection, compilation and dissemination of official statistics besides adopting international standards.

 

9. Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor’s autobiography released recently, titled ‘Shashi Kapoor – the Householder, the Star’.

 

The biography has been authored by film journalist Aseem Chhabra and with foreword by Karan Johar.

It unveils the chapters of actor’s personal and professional life.

He has been conferred the following awards: -

National Film Award for Best actor for the film New Delhi Times (1986)

National Film Award Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film) for Muhafiz (1993)

National Film Award Best Feature Film in Hindi (as Producer) for Junoon (1979)

Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (2010)

International – Across the Globe:

 

1. The ADMM-Plus (ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus) Exercise on Maritime Security and Counter Terrorism (Ex MS & CT) has started at Brunei on May 1, 2016.

 

The nine day exercise that will continue till May 9, 2016, seeks to strengthen the strong bilateral ties and extensive maritime interactions between India and ASEAN countries.

It is a multinational naval exercise conducted under the aegis of ADMM Plus consortium.

The aim is to enhance mutual understanding with respect to maritime security issues and streamlining drills on counter-terrorism operations at sea.

 

2. Australian entrepreneur and computer scientist Craig Wright has publicly identified himself as creator of virtual currency Bitcoin.

 

He claimed that he is the real person behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin which was launched in 2009.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s online cash system work in 2009 was the key for creation of the online cash system, but he remained anonymous and his work has since stopped.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that is unregulated by any central bank or government, but still works for purchasing goods and services from retailers willing to accept it.

 

3. U.S. President Barack Obama has reappointed Indian-American Sachin Dev Pavithran to a key independent government agency devoted to accessibility for people with disabilities.

 

Mr. Pavithran has been reappointed as a Member of the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, the White House said as it announced other key administration appointments

Mr. Pavithran was first appointed to Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board in 2012 and has served as Chair since 2015.

 

4. Switzerland Government has honoured late veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra by unveiling bronze statue at Interlaken.

 

The bronze statue weighing about 250 kilos was inaugurated by his wife Pamela Chopra and daughter-in-law Rani Mukerjee.

Chopra was known for opening a legacy of South Asian tourists flocking to Switzerland and spend much time in the country besides shooting his movies.

This statue has been installed at the heart of Interlaken, inside the Kursaal area near the Congress Centre which is a prime, popular spot with tourists.

1. Indian women’s team has won silver medal in the recurve team final of Archery World Cup held at the Yuanshen Stadium in Shanghai, China.

 

Women’s team comprised of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi Laishram and Laxmirani Majhi.

In the final match they lost to Chinese Taipei team by 2-6 score.

While men’s trio team and mixed pair won their respective bronze playoffs in the first stage of Archery World Cup.

 

2. German Formula One Driver Nico Rosberg from Mercedes team has won 2016 Russian Grand Prix held at the Sochi Autodrom in Sochi, Russia.

 

It was Rosberg’s fourth consecutive win in the 2016 season and overall eighteenth championship title of F1 in his career.

Russian Grand Prix was the fourth race of the 2016 season of Formula One in which total 11 teams had participated and was contested over fifty-three laps.

 

3. Ace snooker player Mark Selby (World no 1) from England has won the 2016 World Championship title of Snooker.

 

In the final match played in Sheffield, Selby defeated China’s Ding Junhui by 18-14 score.

This was Selby’s second World Snooker title after he had won it in 2014 for the first against Ronnie O’Sullivan.

This was Selby’s second title of the year 2016 after he had won minor Gdynia Open event held in Poland.

 

4. Seven Indian shuttlers (Badminton players) have officially earned the qualification for the forthcoming Rio Olympics scheduled to be held in August 2016 in Brazil.

 

They are Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, K. Srikanth, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa, Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy.

The pairs of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa and Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy qualified after the release of latest BWF world rankings.

 

5. Pakistan has won the third edition of the Asian Kabaddi Championship 2016 (Circle Style) by defeating India.

 

In the final match held at Pakistan Ordinance Factory Sports Complex in Wah Cantonment, Pakistan (defending champion) defeated India by 50-31 points.

This is Pakistan’s second successive win in the Asian Kabaddi title as they had won it in 2012.

 

Awards & Recognition:

 

1. An Indian-American journalist Neela Banerjee was felicitated with a prestigious Edgar A Poe award along with of her colleagues from Inside Climate News.

 

The award was given by US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle during the annual White House Correspondents Dinner held in Washington DC.

It was shared by Neela Banerjee and three of her colleagues from Inside Climate News John Cushman Jr, David Hasemyer and Lisa Song and Terrence McCoy of the Washington Post.

 

2. Three Indian Scientist have been elected as the as Fellows of The Royal Society, a premier scientific academy of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

 

Their names had appeared on the list of 50 new fellows and 10 new Foreign Members announced by the Royal Society.

They are: Physicist Sriram Ramaswamy, Biochemist Ramanujan Hegde, Applied mathematician Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan.

 

3. President Pranab Mukherjee has conferred 63rd National Film Awards for the year 2015 in various categories at the function held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

 

Legendry actor Manoj Kumar was conferred 2015 Dada Saheb Phalke Award, highest official recognition (award) in Indian cinema.

Baahubali: The Beginning (Tamil, Telugu film) directed by S. S. Rajamouli was bestowed with the Best feature film award.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Hindi) directed by Kabir Khan was awarded as the Best Popular film providing wholesome entertainment.

Best Actor: Amitabh Bachchan (Piku).

Best Actress: Kangana Ranaut (Tanu Weds Manu Returns).

Best Direction: Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Bajirao Mastani).

 

4. Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Project has won the prestigious World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2016 prize in the e-Agriculture category.

 

Harita-Priya (Harmonized Information of Agriculture, Revenue and Irrigation for a Transformation Agenda – Precision Technology for Agriculture) Project is meant to collect very specific climate data from farms and give farmers personalised information through SMS.

The Harita-Priya Project uses wireless sensor networks to collect micro-climatic information from farms.

 

5. Indian author Parashar Kulkarni has won the regional Commonwealth Short Story Prize for 2016 for the Asia region.

 

He was bestowed with this award for his politically grounded, funny fiction story ‘Cow and Company’ about four men in search of a cow.

The short story was adjudged the ‘best piece of unpublished short fiction in English’ from Asia and will receive 2500 pounds prize.

 

Mergers & Acquisitions:

 

1. Philips plans to sell at least 25 percent of its lighting business on stock market.

 

It is the world’s largest maker of lights.

The move has taken to focus on its larger medical equipment operations.

 

2. The search engine giant Google has acquired business technology startup Synergyse founded by an Indian-origin entrepreneur Varun Malhotra.

 

The financial detail of the acquisition deal was disclosed by the Google.

Synergyse was launched in 2013 with an aim to teach users how to use Google Applications.

With this Synergyse will be joining the Google Apps team and help it to accelerate its mission and build Google Apps.

 

Appointments & Resignations:

 

1. An Indian American Sikh woman Harmeet Kaur Dhillon from California was elected to an important position in the Republican Party at the United States national level.

 

She was elected as the newest national committee woman, a key position of the Republican National Committee.

She also served as vice chairman of the California GOP.

She was the first woman elected to this position of vice chair of the California Republican Party.

 

2. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has selected Mexican diplomat Patricia Espinosa as the executive secretary of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).

 

She will replace the incumbent Christiana Figueres when her term ends in July 2016.

She served as Mexico’s ambassador to Germany.

She also served as Mexico’s representative at the UN in New York for drug traffic, human rights, women promotion, social development and children’s rights.

The UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty negotiated at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and entered into force in 1994.

 

3. Indian Information Service (IIS) officer Bhupendra Kainthola took charge as Director of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

 

He replaced Prashant Pathrabe, who had served as interim Director and shall have tenure of three years.

He also served as Director (News Room) with DD News since January 2015.

FTII is premier institute in the country that provides training for acting, film making, video editing, direction and production.

It is an autonomous body under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

 

4. Renowned statistician Dr Radha Binod Barman took over as the part-time Chairperson in the National Statistical Commission (NSC).

 

Besides, Professor Rahul Mukherjee, Professor S. Mahendra Dev, Dr Rajiv Mehta and Dr Manoj Panda also took over as other part-time members of the commission.

The Commission is an advisory body on all statistical matters, set up to enhance public trust in official statistics.

 

5. Renowned statistician Dr. Radha Binod Barman took over as the part-time Chairperson in the National Statistical Commission (NSC).

 

Besides, Professor Rahul Mukherjee, Professor S. Mahendra Dev, Dr Rajiv Mehta and Dr Manoj Panda also took over as other part-time members of the commission.

The Commission is an advisory body on all statistical matters, set up to enhance public trust in official statistics.

It was established in 2006 based on the recommendation of C. Rangarajan Commission to reduce problems faced by statistical agencies in the country in relation to collection of data.

 

6. Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba has been appointed as next Chief of the Naval Staff.

 

He will be 23rd chief of Indian Navy and 21st as an Indian.

He will assume the charge on 31 May 2016 and shall have full three-year-term in office till 31 May 2019.

He will succeed incumbent Navy Chief Admiral Robin K. Dhowan, who will superannuate from the post on 31 May 2016.

 

7. Senior IPS officer Kumar Rajesh Chandra was appointed as Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the aviation security wing of the Government.

 

His appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) presided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He has been appointed in place of IPS officer G S Malhi, who had completed his tenure as BCAS chief in November 2012. Since then crucial post was lying vacant.

BCAS is a nodal independent agency of the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for civil aviation security.

 

8. Former South African cricketer Mickey Arthur has been appointed as cricket team’s head coach.

 

It was announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

With this appointment he fills the role vacated by Waqar Younis’ resignation in April 2016 following Pakistan’s early exit from the T20 World Cup.

This is Arthur’s third assignment with an assignment of international coaching.

Earlier he coached South Africa from 2005 to 2010 and Australia from 2011 to 2013.

 

Economics & Banking GK:

 

1. ICICI Bank is auctioning a prime property of tyre manufacturer Dunlop India spread over an acre on the upscale Annie Besant Road in Mumbai to recover loans to Ruia Group companies.

 

The bank took over the property’s possession after Bhartiya Hotels, Shalini Properties & Developers and SPR Resorts defaulted on Rs 575-crore loan given in 2008. The loan was taken by mortgaging the property owned by Dunlop India, another company of the Kolkata-based Ruia Group.

It initiated the auction process in the first week of April and the reserve price is Rs 240 crore.

 

Bills – New & Amendments:

 

1. The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 came into force on 1 May 2016.

 

Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) had notified 69 of the total 92 sections of the Act to bring it into force from 1 May 2016.

Real Estate Regulatory Authority will be formulated within one year as per the mandate of Act.

Regulatory Authorities will have to dispose of complaints in 60 days and Appellate Tribunals will be required to adjudicate cases in 60 days.

 

2. Parliament has passed Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016.

 

The Bill amends the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

The amendment Bill was first passed in the Lok Sabha in March 2016 and later in the Rajya Sabha in May 2016.

 

3. The Lok Sabha passed the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Bill, 2015 with the motive to the establishment of funds under the public accounts of Centre and each State towards compensatory afforestation.

 

It also provides for additional afforestation and penal compensatory afforestation to regulate collected funds.

It seeks to establish the National Compensatory Afforestation Fund under the Public Account of India, and a State Compensatory Afforestation Fund under the Public Account of each state.

 

4. The Lok Sabha has unanimously passed Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2015 by a voice vote.

 

The code seeks to ensure time-bound settlement of insolvency, faster turnaround of businesses and create a unified data base of serial defaulters.

The Code creates time-bound processes for resolution of the insolvency of companies and individuals.

 

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU):

 

1. The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has inked MoU with SAARC Development Fund (SDF) for mutual cooperation and collaboration.

 

The MoU was signed by SIDBI Deputy Managing Director A K Kapur and SDF CEO Sunil Motiwal.

SDF and SIDBI to work together in co-funding of projects in Indian MSMEs on risk sharing basis in identified sectors.

 

2. India and New Zealand have signed a landmark Air Services Agreement paving the way for introduction of direct flights between the two countries.

 

The agreement was signed in the presence of the President Pranab Mukherjee and the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.

The agreement will lead to easier air connectivity between both countries that have inhibited both business travel and people- to- people contact in the past.

 

3. The Union Ministry of Railways and Forest Department of Haryana & Punjab have inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for plantation of trees alongside Railway Track on Railway Land Boundary.

 

The MoU paves way for planting around 5 lakh trees alongside Railway Track on Railway Land Boundary prior to Monsoon Season.

This agreement paves way improvements with regard to afforestation on railway land.

 

4. The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Central Bank of United Arab Emirates (UAE) on co-operation concerning currency swap agreement.

 

Decision in this regard was taken at the Union Cabinet Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The Agreement was signed in February, 2016 during the official state visit of Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India.

 

5. The Union Cabinet has apprised of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for promoting bilateral cooperation in the field of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

 

Decision in this regard was taken by the Union Cabinet Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The MoU was signed between both countries in March, 2015 and was ratified by both India and Qatar on 1st January, 2016 and 12th January, 2016 respectively.

It seeks to boost active cooperation and exchanges between the private entities, capacity building institutions, Governments and other public organisations in the field of ICT.

 

6. The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the renewed Agreement for Scientific and Technological Cooperation with European Union (EU) for another period of 5 years.

 

Decision in this regard was taken by Union Cabinet Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The agreement will be retrospectively effective from 17 May 2015 until 2020.

The agreement will reaffirm India-EU’s shared commitment to research and innovation as drivers of social and economic development.

 

7. India’s largest private sector lender ICICI Bank has inked a MoU with the BRICS Grouping-promoted New Development Bank (NDB) for a partnership in bond issuances, co-financing, treasury management and human resources.

 

With this ICICI Bank becomes first financial institution in the country to tie up with the BRICS Grouping-promoted NDB.

The MoU was signed by BDB’s first President and ICICI Bank veteran KV Kamath and ICICI Bank Chief Chanda Kochhar in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

NDB is a multilateral development bank promoted by BRICS Nations viz. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It is outcome of 6th BRICS Summit being held in Fortaleza, Brazil.

 

Science & Technology:

 

1. The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has launched mobile app “Indian Customs- Guide to Travellers” for dissemination of information about Customs Baggage Rules, 2016.

 

The application has been launched to inform traders, exporters and importers about Customs Baggage Rules, 2016.

It has been developed by Bengaluru Customs and is available on Android Play store, Apple Store and Windows Store.

 

2. INS Kalvari, Indian Navy’s first indigenous Scorpene-class stealth submarine, has recently launched for the first sea trial in the Mumbai naval dockyard.

 

It is a diesel-electric attack submarine which is built under the strategic Project 75 by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in collaboration with French naval defence and Energy Company DCNS.

INS Kalvari is also known as Tiger Shark (or S50).

It is expected to be commissioned into Indian Navy by September 2016.

 

3. The Union Railways Ministry has launched an application namely Project Management and Information System (PMIS) for proper monitoring of all the Railway projects throughout the country.

 

The application was launched by Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi.

At present Indian Railways have over 600 major projects of network expansion and modernization costing around 4.5 lakh crores rupees.

 

4. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the Public Sector Power equipment manufacturer has commissioned 600 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh.

 

The unit was commissioned at the 1×600 MW Jhabua Thermal Power Project (TPP) located in Seoni district in Madhya Pradesh.

The project has been developed by Jhabua Power Ltd (JPL), a subsidiary of Avantha Power & Infrastructure Limited (APIL).

 

5. Scientists have developed world’s Smallest (Nano) Thermometer using DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) structures that can fold and unfold at specifically defined temperature functions.

 

Scientists at the University of Montreal developed it and the study report in this regard was published in the journal Nano Letters.

It can help in understanding of natural and human designed nanotechnologies by enabling to measure temperature at the nanoscale.

It can be incorporated in new electronic devices and has a wide range of applications across fields of chemistry and physics.

 

6. A group of researchers from University of Cambridge have built the world’s smallest (nanoscale) working engine.

 

The research team was led by Professor Jeremy Baumberg from the Cavendish Laboratory.

They have named the microscopic engine as ANTs (Actuating Nano-Transducers).

 

7. The Union Government has announced that currently 34 Indian satellites are operational in the space.

 

It was announced by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.

34 operational satellites includes:

13 Communication Satellites: INSAT-3A, INSAT-3C, INSAT-4A, INSAT-4B, INSAT-4CR, GSAT-6, GSAT-7, GSAT-8, GSAT-10, GSAT-12, GSAT-14, GSAT-15 and GSAT-16.

12 Earth Observation Satellites: Resourcesat-2, RISAT-1, RISAT-2, Cartosat-1, Cartosat-2, Cartosat-2A, Cartosat-2B, Oceansat-2, SARAL, Kalpana-1, Megha-Tropiques and INSAT-3D.

7 Navigational Satellites: IRNSS-1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F and 1G. 2 Space science Satellites: Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) and Astrosat.

 

8. Bangladesh Government has given its in-principle approval to Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power’s first phase of the 3,000 MW LNG-based power plant at Meghnaghat in Narayanganj district.

 

This approval has paved the way for the largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Bangladesh with a potential investment of over 8,700 crore rupees (1.3 billion dollars).

FSRU-based LNG terminal will supply re-gasified LNG for the power project and additional RLNG to PetroBangla.

 

9. Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has launched Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Shaurya at Panaji.

 

It was launched by the Governor of Goa, Mridula Sinha, in the presence of GSl and ICG officials.

ICGS Shaurya is fifth of a series of six Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) designed in-house and built by GSL.

10. US based private space transport Service Company, SpaceX has successfully launched Japanese JCSAT-14 communication satellite into the space.

 

The satellite was place into its intended preliminary geostationary transfer orbit by SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket which was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, US.

JCSAT-14 Satellite is owned by Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation.

The satellite will boost the company’s fleet of relay stations to 17.

The satellite is built by Space Systems/Loral and is equipped with 26 C-band and 18 Ku-band transponders.

 

Important Dates:

 

1. Every year 3^rd May is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day.

 

World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference.
