1. NTPC has adopted Charminar under Swachh Iconic Places Project

NTPC Ltd has adopted the iconic Charminar in Hyderabad under the Swachh Iconic Places Projects of India.

 NTPC Ltd and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have signed an agreement for development and beautification works under the Charminar Project in Hyderabad.

2.Odisha’s Health Insurance Scheme for Journalists: Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana

The Odisha State Government has launched a new Health Insurance Scheme for the journalists. Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana provides INR 2 Lakh per annum health insurance cover to all working journalists of the state.

 The scheme will cover around 3200 journalists and their family members from various media groups.

3. Himachal Pradesh imposed a ban on the use of Thermocol Plates

Himachal Pradesh CM Jai Ram Thakur announced a ban on the use of thermocol plates in the state, as well plastic water bottles less than one-liter capacity as they are a major cause of pollution.

 Steel bottle would be provided to each student in all government schools in the state to discourage the use of plastic bottles.

 For scientific management of waste, 10 solid waste management plants would be established across the state.

4. Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan has been launched to improve Farming Techniques

Under the PM Narendra Modi’s vision of doubling farmers’ income by 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and farmers’ welfare has launched the Krishi Kalyan Abhiyaan to support, assist and advise farmers on how to improve their farming techniques and raise their incomes.

 The Krishi Kalyan Abhiyaan will be undertaken in 25 Villages with more than 1000 population each in Aspirational Districts from 1st June 2018 till 31st July.

5. The government has launched ‘JANAUSHADHI SUVIDHA’ – Oxo-biodegradable Sanitary Napkin

The Union Minister has launched the Oxo-biodegradable Sanitary Napkin named ‘JANAUSHADHI SUVIDHA’, under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).

 The affordable sanitary napkins will be available at over 3600 Janaushadhi Kendras functional in 33 States/UTs across India.

 The scheme was launched by Union Minister of Chemical & Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Ananth Kumar on March 8, 2018 (World Women’s day).

6. India is going to become 1st in Asia to Develop ‘Blue Flag’ Beaches

13 Indian beaches will be developed according to the Blue Flag certification standards by the Society for Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM), an environment ministry’s body working for the management of coastal areas.

 A beach has to strictly comply with 33 environment and tourism-related conditions to get Blue Flag standards.

 These beaches of Odisha, Maharashtra and other coastal states will be the first in not just India, but in Asia, to get the Blue Flag certification.

7. India is Ranked among the Top Five Countries Generating e-Waste

According to ASSOCHAM-NEC study published on Environment Day (June 5), India is one of the top five countries generating e-waste, despite the government’s emphasis on Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan and Smart Cities project.

 The other countries in top 5 of the e-waste generation chart are China, USA, Japan and Germany.

 In India, Maharashtra contributes the largest e-waste of 19.8%.

 This e-Waste includes discarded computer monitors, motherboards, Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT), Printed Circuit Board (PCB), mobile phones and chargers, compact discs, headphones etc.

8. Andhra Pradesh has become the first state to use auto-disable syringes for all Clinical Purposes

Andhra Pradesh has become the first state in India to use auto-disable syringes for all clinical purposes to prevent infection.

 The state will implement this decision from the World Hepatitis Day, observed on July 28.

 Auto Disable Syringe is a medical syringe that cannot be reused. They incorporate a mechanism to break or lock syringe plunger when the injection is given to make syringe inoperable for being used for the second time.

 It will help in strengthening and lowering burden of infections by breaking the cycle of cross infection.

1. Singapore has Named Exotic Orchid After PM Narendra Modi

An orchid was named after PM Narendra Modi to commemorate his visit to the National Orchid Garden of Singapore.

 The orchid was named Dendrobium Narendra Modi to mark Prime Minister’s visit.

 The orchid is located within the Singapore Botanic Garden, which is the only tropical garden to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. IBSA Ministerial Meet held at Pretoria, South Africa

A summit chaired by India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was organized in Pretoria, South Africa between external affairs ministers of India, Brazil and South Africa.

 The main objective of IBSA Ministerial Meet is to increase trade/exchange of information opportunities between the three countries and their efforts in international poverty and social development.

3. Five Countries were Elected as non-Permanent Members of UNSC

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has elected South Africa, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Germany and Belgium as non-permanent members of UN Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term.

 UNSC is responsible for determining the existence of the threat against peace and to respond to act of aggression. It is also responsible for finding peaceful means to settle conflict or dispute between states.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) | Get the Best Information Out of Top Agreements

1. Environment Ministry has Signed an MoU with TERI to Set up a Resource Efficiency Cell

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has signed an agreement to set up a resource efficiency cell in the Ministry.

 The main objectives of the Cell are to provide a platform to mainstream resource efficiency in public policy.

 The European Union and MoEFCC also signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) to support the implementation of the EU Resource Efficiency Initiative (EU-REI) Project in India.

2. Andhra Pradesh has inked an agreement with Singapore for Amaravati Development

The State Government of Andhra Pradesh and Singapore has signed several pacts for the development of a start-up area (1,691 acres) in the new capital, Amaravati, to transform it into a world-class city.

 Under the agreement, the land would be handed over in three phases to the Singapore companies for infrastructure development and other promotional activities.

3. India has signed 2 MoUs with China on sharing of Brahmaputra river data and supply of non-Basmati rice

2 MoUs were signed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held detailed discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on bilateral and global issues to take forward agenda set at informal Wuhan Summit of April 2018.

 Under the MoU on sharing of Brahmaputra river data, China will provide India hydrological data of the Brahmaputra River in flood season crucial to predict floods.

 The MoU on Phytosanitary requirements is related to Phytosanitary requirements for exporting rice from India to China, one of the world’s biggest rice markets.

1. RBI Reviewed its Monetary Policy: Hike in Repo Rate to 6.25%

The Reserve Bank of India has hiked the key rate for the first time in over four years by 0.25% to curb inflationary pressure from high oil prices, a move which will translate into higher EMIs for home, auto and other loans.

New Rates are:

 Repo Rate: 6.25%

 Reverse Repo Rate: 6.00%

 Marginal standing facility (MSF) rate: 6.5%.

2. World Bank has estimated Growth Rate for India at 7.3 %

The World Bank has predicted that India is going to become fastest growing country among major emerging economies with a growth rate of 7.3 % for this year and 7.5 % for the next two years.

 A top World Bank official said that India’s economy is robust, resilient and has potential to deliver sustained growth.

3. FDI in India rises to US $61.96 billion in 2017-18: DIPP

According to Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), the foreign direct investment (FDI) in India increased to the US $61.96 billion in 2017-18. FDI inflow in previous fiscal was US $60 billion.

 In last four years period, FDI inflows have jumped to US 4222.75 billion from US $152 billion.

 The maximum FDI was received in services, computer software and hardware, telecommunications, construction, trading and automobile sectors.

 Major sources of FDI to Indian included Mauritius, Singapore, Japan, Netherlands, US, Germany, France and UAE.

1. Agni-5 Missile has been Successfully Tested

The long-range ballistic missile Agni 5 is successfully tested from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island and all the mission objectives have been achieved.

 All the Radars, Electro-Optical Tracking Stations and Telemetry Stations tracked the vehicle all through the course of the trajectory.

2. MIT Scientists have Created World’s First “Psychopathic” AI

A team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has built a psychopathic AI named ‘Norman’ using image pulled from Reddit.

 They’ve named it Norman after Alfred Hitchcock’s Norman Bates.

 Norman is a particular type of AI program that can “look at” and “understand” pictures, and then describe what it sees in writing.

3. Malabar 2018: India, Japan and the US start naval exercise off coast of Guam Island in western Pacific

Trilateral 22nd edition of Naval Exercise Malabar 2018 between India, Japan and the United States kicked off the coast of Guam in the Philippine Sea.

 It will be first naval wargame after the US renamed its Hawaii-based Pacific Command (PACOM) as Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM)

 It focuses on increased Chinese activities of building artificial islands in the South China Sea and sending submarines into the Indian Ocean.

 The main aim of the exercise is to focus on high-end warfighting skillsets, subject matter expert and professional exchanges.
