Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology!
The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), the late Dr. (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.
The Prize is given to outstanding performers in the field of Science & Technology.
In 1958, the award was presented for the first time to Mr. Kariamanickam Srinivasa Krishnan for his discovery of Raman Scattering.

What is the Eligibility Criteria to receive the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award?
The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research has set some specific guidelines to determine the eligibility conditions for the nominees of this notable Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award.
Please check whether you are eligible or not for this award –
Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of science and technology can be awarded the SSB prize.
Overseas citizen of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) working in India are also eligible.
The candidate must not exceed the age of 45 years.
The awardee must have made conspicuously important and outstanding contributions to human knowledge and progress – fundamental and applied – in the field of endeavor, which is his/her specialization.
The Prize is awarded based on contributions made through work done primarily in India during the five years preceding the year of the Prize. (For this purpose ‘primarily’ will mean ‘for the most part’)

What is the Prize Money for SSB Award?
The prize is awarded based on the contributions made through research work done in India only during the five years preceding the year of the prize.
The prize comprises a citation, a plaque, and a cash award of 5 Lakhs Rupees. (Previously it was 2 lakh rupees only)
In addition, recipients also get INR 15,000 per month up to the age of 65 years.
The award can be presented to multiple winners (maximum 2 individuals) from each discipline.
What is the Selection Procedure for the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize?
Before reaching the final selection procedure, CSIR Advisor Committee first goes through the nomination process and then the conclusion based on the maximum votes is declared.
1. Nomination Process:
In this round, the nominees’ names can be proposed by any of the eminent persons and organizations like –
A Member of the Governing Body of CSIR
Presidents of Academies of all-India character
Vice Chancellors of Indian Universities, Deemed Universities and Institutions of National Importance
Deans of Science, Engineering, Medical, Agriculture, and Technology Faculties
Directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)
Directors General of the major R&D Organizations such as the DRDO, ICAR, ICMR and IMD
Chairmen of Atomic Energy Commission, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, etc.
Directors of CSIR Laboratories/ Institutes, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Physical Research Laboratory, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, etc.
Secretaries of the Government Science Departments like the Department of Atomic Energy, the Department of Biotechnology, the Department of Environment, the Department of Information Technology, the Department of Ocean Development, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Department of Space; etc.

Note: Apart from these, the University Faculties can also recommend scientists working in their institutions through their Directors or Vice Chancellors.
Each nomination, as per the prescribed proforma, should be accompanied by a detailed statement of work and attainments of the nominee and a critical assessment report (not more than 500 words) bringing out the importance of significant research and development contributions of the nominee made during the five years preceding the year of the Prize.
Nominations not made as per prescribed format are unacceptable.
Important: A candidate once nominated would be considered for a total period of three years, if age-wise eligible.
Once such a nomination has been received, CSIR may correspond directly with the nominator for supplementary information, if necessary. In case a nominee has resigned from his present position in India and has gone abroad, his nomination would become invalid immediately.
2. Selection Procedure:
After receiving the nominees’ names, further procedure is being followed by the Advisory Committee of CSIR.
The Committee consist of at least six experts including at least one former Bhatnagar Awardee in the respective discipline.
On receipt of nominations for a year, CSIR circulates the list of nominees along with the detailed statement of work and attainments of each candidate to all members of the Advisory Committee related to the concerned discipline. CSIR convenes meetings of the various Advisory Committees in consultation with the Chairmen, for selecting the recipients of the SSB Prizes.
The compositions of various Committees, the information submitted for their scrutiny, the proceedings of the meetings and the procedure for consideration of the nominations, other than as detailed herein, are kept confidential.
G N Ramachandran Gold Medal for Excellence in Biological Sciences & Technology!
The Award is named after Prof. G N Ramachandran who was an Indian Physicist. To recognize the candidates’ excellent work done in the fields of Biological Sciences & Technology, CSIR Presents this award annually.

CSIR Young Scientist Awards for Excellence in Science & Technology!
In 1987, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) introduced a scheme of Awards for Young Scientists to promote excellence in various fields of science and technology. These Awards are known as “CSIR Young Scientist Awards”.
What is the Eligibility Criteria to receive the CSIR Young Scientist Awards?
To check whether you are eligible or not, please read the eligibility criteria given below –
The candidates should not age more than 35 years.
Any scientist, engaged in research work in any of the CSIR laboratories/institutes is eligible for this prestigious award.
The Nominee should be a regular scientific staff of CSIR system holding a post of Junior/Trainee Scientist or above and should have joined the CSIR laboratory on or prior to 26 September of the previous year.
Apart from these conditions, candidates must have done some exceptional inventions or discoveries in the various fields of Science & Technology like – Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences, Engineering Sciences and Physical Sciences.
What is the Prize Money for CSIR Young Scientist Awards?
The candidates who win this award are benefitted with a citation (signed by the Director General, CSIR and the Vice-President, CSIR), a plaque and a cash prize of INR 50,000.
In addition, Awardees are entitled to a Special Honorarium of INR 7500/- per month till the age of 45 years. This incentive shall be admissible only if the recipient remains in the service of CSIR.
Research grant of INR 25 lakh over a period of five years, is also given, which is normally to the tune of INR 5 lakh per annum per CSIR Young Scientist Awardee.
What is the Selection Procedure for the CSIR Young Scientist Award?
The selection procedure for the CSIR Young Scientist Award is as follows –
1. Nomination:
The Directors or Chairperson of Research Councils / Bhatnagar Awardees can propose nominations only of scientists belonging to the CSIR laboratories/ institutes with which they are associated. Each of them can send normally a maximum of two nominations in each discipline.
Information regarding the nominations should be sent as per the prescribed proforma (WORD / PDF Format) on or before the closing date (as notified every year).
2. Advisory Committee:
Duly approved Advisory Committees will be constituted in the above-mentioned five fields for making selections for the “CSIR Young Scientist Awards”.
3. Selection Procedure:
Each nominee is required to make a brief presentation (15 minutes) about his/her research work before the concerned Advisory Committee. This may be followed by 5 minutes’ question-answer session / discussion.
Note: After the selections, each Awardee is required to submit a research project indicating the contingency and equipment grant that would be required by him/her for the pursuit of research as per his/her proposed project.
The project should have the approval of the Director/ Research Council of the laboratories/ institute.
