How to Maintain Your Color-Treated Hair

Tags: hair

No matter what color you change your Hair, your hair will always need the proper care and maintenance to stay healthy. Whether you change up your hair to become more ombre, platinum, red, pink, rainbow, or black, we have the perfect guide to keep your hair looking its best. Read more to learn how to nourish your hair and keep your new color always looking vibrant.

Use Sulfate-Free Products

Be careful when shopping at drug stores if you want to maintain your brand-new colored hair. Most common shampoos and well-known drug store products carry sulfate, which tends to strip the color out of your hair. Be sure to ask your salon for recommendations or visit your local Sally Beauty for budget-friendly and sulfate-free products.

Wash Your Hair with Cold Water

Using high heat while showering can cause your hair color to end up down the drain. If you want to keep your hair from becoming dull, be sure to rinse out your shampoo and conditioner with cold water. This can help your hair to last longer and stay brighter.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Much

Time to throw on that hair cap you hardly ever use! The more you wash your hair, the faster your color will fade, especially if your water is hard. With all the time and money you put into your new hair, you definitely don’t want that to happen. It is best to wash your hair 2-3 times a week and if you have naturally oily hair, be sure to invest in a dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is a great way to add texture, volume, and style to your hair.

Add Deep Conditioner to Your Routine

Conditioning your hair at least once a week can make a difference and strengthen your damaged hair. Most salons offer deep conditioning treatments for a reasonable price or you can invest in a sulfate-free hair mask to keep your hair color looking vibrant. Visit our student salon at Studio Academy of beauty and we can make that happen for you. All services provided by students are under the supervision of licensed professionals.

Leave-in conditioners are also a great way to combat winter dryness and keep your hair moisturized in the Arizona heat. Hair treatments can provide your hair with that extra love and care. Olaplex is a great product for repairing hair and can be purchased at most Sephora locations. Weekly conditioning can prevent your hair from becoming static during those dryer, winter months.

Take a Break from the Heat

Unfortunately, when you color your hair it becomes more damaged, but luckily you can restore it back to health. One of the best ways to get your hair looking and feeling healthy again is by avoiding blow dryers, straighteners, and curlers. Give your hair a couple of months before applying heat again and be sure to air dry it more often. If you have to use heat every now and then, be sure to use heat protection spray and a lower temperature than what you usually use.

Protect Your Hair from the Sun

Speaking of heat, you are definitely going to want to protect your hair from the sun. UV rays have a tendency to oxidize color pigment and cause your color to fade. Be sure to add a cute hat to your style if you are planning on going outside for long.

Invest in Quality Shampoo and Conditioner

Hair salons carry all sorts of great shampoo and conditioner options specific to your hair color. If you are looking for a product that can repair your hair or keep your color vibrant, ask your stylist for recommendations.

If you are now blonde or platinum, it’s important to also invest in a purple shampoo and conditioner that is sulfate-free. Purple shampoo is meant to prevent the yellow in your hair and should be used once or twice a week.

Be Extra Gentle with Your Hair

Color-treated hair has a tendency to break more easily. When brushing, towel drying, or washing your hair, be sure to be extra gentle when trying to get the tangles out. Using a detangler spray and wide-toothed comb can assist you in being more careful with your hair. Detangling your hair adds a smoother process to your hair routine after showering.

When styling your hair, remind yourself to always be cautious and careful. It’s especially important to be gentle with your hair when removing braids, hair clips, or elastic bands.
