5 Surprising Things You’ll Learn as a Cosmetologist

If you’re interested in starting your Cosmetology education, you probably have a general idea of what you’ll learn. Haircutting and coloring, skincare, makeup, and manicuring are all skills taught in most cosmetology schools, but there are many other important skills and techniques you might not expect to learn as a beauty student. Every cosmetology school is a little different, so in this blog post, we’ll go over 5 surprising things you’ll learn in our Cosmetology Program!

Let’s Get Started!

1. Chemistry, Anatomy, and Other Sciences

You may have thought you finished learning about science in high school, but it’s essential for beauty students to learn a bit more about science-related topics. Brushing up on chemistry will help keep your clients safe when you use products with chemicals to do perms, nails, facials, and of course, color and hairstyling.

Learning about anatomy is also important since you’ll be providing services related to hair, skin, and nails. That’s why our cosmetology students spend time learning how to protect those areas of the body against potential irritants and damage. We also teach our students how to recognize and properly treat any harmful rashes, infections, and chemical reactions.

  • Besides chemistry and anatomy, our Cosmetology Program also covers:
  • Physiology, Histology, Electricity, Bacteriology, and Biology
  • Sanitation, Sterilization, Disease, and Infection Control
  • Structure, Composition, Function, Conditions and Disorders of the Skin, Scalp, Hair, and Nails

2. Business Skills

Knowing how to provide beauty services is just one part of being a cosmetologist. Another part that’s equally important is knowing how to promote, run, and grow your business. We cover a wide range of business skills in our Cosmetology Program, including:

  • Marketing Techniques
  • Financial Management
  • Resume Preparation and Interview Skills
  • Career and Employment Information
  • Fundamentals of Business Management and Shop Operation
  • Salon Development, Insurance, and Client Records
  • Salesmanship and Professional Ethics
  • Leadership

Becoming familiar with the business side of beauty can help you no matter what kinds of services you offer. Even if you later decide the beauty industry isn’t for you, many of these skills are transferable in other aspects of life.

3. Communication Skills

You’ll be communicating with clients often when scheduling and providing services. Our Cosmetology Program teaches students valuable communication skills, so they can be prepared to interact with all kinds of different personalities and handle different situations or conflicts with poise.

Besides basic communication and interpersonal skills, the curriculum also includes conflict resolution and problem-solving. In a perfect world, problems would never arise between cosmetologists and clients, but sometimes these things happen. As a future cosmetologist, you need to know how to handle both positive and negative interactions, so you have a better chance of creating the desired outcome.

4. State Laws and Business Practices

Arizona state laws, regulations, and professional business practices might not fill you with excitement, but they’re important to learn about nonetheless. If you’re hoping to earn a living as a cosmetologist, you need to know all the rules and laws to follow, so you don’t run into any avoidable legal problems down the road. We can probably all agree it’s better to prevent a legal headache than to deal with one!

5. What You’re Capable Of

You’ll experience lots of new, exciting, and challenging things in cosmetology school. All of these new experiences will help you learn more about yourself and what you’re capable of.

There might be difficult days when you can’t get the hang of a certain technique and you make some mistakes. There might also be great days when you learn a new skill with ease and get a boost of self-confidence.

The way you react to these different types of situations can show you what you’re made of. By helping you grow, both as a future cosmetologist and as a person, cosmetology classes can prepare you for an exciting new chapter of life after graduation.
