What Can A Hairstylist Learn?

Throughout history, Hair has been one of the best ways for people to express themselves and define their appearance. It’s almost impossible to scroll through your social feed without seeing the latest hair trends and this is thanks to hairstylists. If you have an interest in Hairstyling, you may be wondering how to become one and what they do learn in beauty school.

In the past, you’ve had to go through a full cosmetology Program to become a licensed hairstylist. Within that program, you’ll also learn about nails, makeup, and skincare. But what if you’re only wanting to learn about hair? Here at The Studio Academy of Beauty, we now offer a hairstylist program for those wanting to only focus on hair.

What Do Hairstylists Do?

Hairstylists offer a wide range of hair services to their clients, including styling, cutting, and coloring. While the main goal of hairstyling is to provide clients with the hairstyle of their choice, you’ll also want to provide them with product and maintenance recommendations to maintain healthy hair.

You’ll typically find hairstylists in salons, but a career in hairstyling can lead to other opportunities and growth as well. Some careers hairstylists can pursue include:

  • Salon Manager/Owner
  • Beauty School Instructor
  • Advertising Stylist
  • Film and Theater Stylist
  • Fashion Consultant
  • Freelance Hairstylist

Hairstyling allows you to show your creative side while helping people look and feel their best. Many hairstylists will tell you that hairstyling is a rewarding career and after you obtain your license doors will start to open up.

How to Become a Hairstylist

The first step to becoming a hairstylist is to enroll in a hairstylist program. Once enrolled you’ll need to complete your state’s required hours and sit for the state exam. It’s important to note that the hours required vary depending on what state you’re studying in. In Arizona, 1000 hours are required in order to receive a hairstyling license.

When it comes to choosing the program for you, keep in mind that hairstylist programs may not always be available. Beauty schools will most likely always have cosmetology programs, but it isn’t easy to find programs dedicated to only hair.

Here at The Studio Academy of Beauty, we are proud to offer a hairstylist program for our students only wanting to learn about hair. Not only do we offer this program, but we’re also the only school in the state of Arizona to offer approved financial aid* options for our hairstyling program.

What Hairstylists Learn in Beauty School

When choosing to focus on hairstyling, rather than cosmetology, you’re cutting the hours required by the state to obtain your license. For example, our cosmetology program is 1600 hours, while our hairstyling program is only 1000 hours, allowing you to start styling hair sooner.

The goal of any good hairstyling program is to teach students the latest hairstyling trends in the industry. Some of the things you can learn in our program are:

  • Hair Cutting
  • Hair Styling
  • Hair Coloring
  • Editorial Styling
  • Product Knowledge
  • Business Skills

These are just some of the things that you can learn in our hairstyling program. A good program can also prepare you to sit for your state exams. Hairstyling programs are a great option for those who know exactly what they want to get out of beauty school.
