How To Build a Healthy Skincare Routine

Behind great Skin, is an even greater skincare routine. Having a healthy skincare routine is a great way to practice self-care and show yourself some much-needed TLC. Building a skincare routine, and sticking to it, is easier said than done. We get busy, and skincare isn’t always the first thing on your mind, but by finding a healthy routine your skin will be thanking you!

If you have a passion for beauty and skincare, you should consider becoming an esthetician. In the ever-changing world of beauty, there are more and more career opportunities for estheticians each year. Where To Start: The Main Steps

Whether you’re here to build a new skincare routine or improve your current one, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. We’re constantly seeing different product endorsements and skincare techniques from different influencers. But which routine is the best? The short answer is: no one routine is ‘best’. Our skin is unique and your skincare routine should be as well.

However, when developing a routine, it’s recommended to have the following steps. Many routines will have additional steps, but a solid morning and nighttime skincare routine should include these core components.

Cleansing

The first step to any healthy skincare routine is cleansing. Washing your face is the most basic step of any skincare routine and some argue it is the most important step. Our face comes into contact with dirt, pollens, and other outdoor factors. It’s recommended that you wash your face in the morning and at night. When it comes to what cleansers are best, that is completely dependent on what skin type you have. Types of cleansers include, but are not limited to:

  • Gel Cleansers: Ideal for oily skin types.
  • Cream Cleansers: Ideal for dry skin types.
  • Foam Cleansers: Ideal for oily-combination skin types.
  • Oil Cleansers: Ideal for dry skin. (Can’t be used with eyelash extensions)

Starting and ending your day with cleansing is a great way to refresh your skin and remove any unwanted impurities. The right cleanser formula will clean your skin without stripping any healthy oils.

Serums

Serums will add a boost to your skincare routine. Serums are high-concentration formulas with larger molecules. They’re designed to protect and hydrate your skin and work best after cleansing. We also recommended finding a serum with active ingredients. Active ingredients can bring faster and higher quality results. Common types of serums include:

  • Anti-Aging Serums
  • Skin Brightening Serums
  • Acne Fighting Serums
  • Hydrating Serums
  • Exfoliating Serums

Similar to cleansers, the one size fits all mentality won’t work. You’ll want to find a serum that meets your skincare needs. Some serums can help with fine lines and wrinkles, while others can help with dry and irritated skin. Serums are a great addition to your routine because they have numerous benefits and feel light on the skin.

Moisturize

The next step your skincare routine should have is moisturizing. Moisturizers are for hydrating and softening the skin. This step will help protect your healthy skin cells, reduce irritation, and set any products used in your routine. When it comes to moisturizers, there are three main types:

  • Oil-Based (Emollients): These can hydrate and help restore lipids.
  • Water-Based (Humectants): These help dry and seal your pores.
  • Silicone/Oil-Based (Occlusives): These seal water in and are recommended for dry skin.

Without a moisturizer, you’re leaving your skin prone to dryness and inflammation. Moisturizers keep your skin cells happy and reduce the chances of irritated skin and acne. If you don’t already have this step as a part of your routine, add it! Your skin will be thanking you!

Sunscreen

We all understand the importance of sunscreen during the warmer months, but in reality, you should be wearing sunscreen year-round. One of the most harmful things to your skin is UV rays, also known as sunlight. The best way to protect your skin from UV rays is with SPF sunscreen. Not only does it protect your skin, but it also lowers your risk of skin cancer. That being said, not all sunscreens are created equal.

There are two main types of sunscreen:

  • Chemical Sunscreens: These sunscreens are easy to apply and will protect you, but are not recommended for people with sensitive skin.
  • Mineral Sunscreens: Typically, the two main types of ingredients in these sunscreens are zinc and titanium dioxide. This sunscreen is recommended for individuals who are worried about chemical exposure, but it does take about 30 minutes to absorb into the skin.

Sunscreen is one of the most important steps to add to your skincare routine because it protects you from harmful rays. If you aren’t good at remembering to put on sunscreen, then you should consider a moisturizer that has included SPF. If you’re putting on moisturizer and sunscreen separately, remember to put on moisturizer first.

Give Your Routine Time

For us, the most important part of your healthy skincare routine is to give it time. While skincare products have come a long way, no routine can give you the results you want in a day. Consistency is key when building a new routine and the only way to see results. It takes about a month before you start to see any changes.

Caring for your skin is personal and it’s important to do your research on any products you’d want to add to your routine. A good skincare routine can help with difficult skin and boost your confidence! Our skin is our largest organ so it’s important to keep it happy.
