9 Things to Do Over Summer Break

Tags: summer

If you're not enrolled in Summer classes, you've surely been taking some time to rest and enjoy yourself. There's much to be said for lazing by the pool or seaside after two intense semesters. But if you add a little structure to your break, you'll arrive back at school that much more on top of your game. Here are nine things you can do to make the most of your downtime this summer.

Focus on Active Resting

You not only deserve a break but you also need one. However, you can unwind and have fun while keeping your mind sharp. Try using a brain-training app such as Memorise, Lumosity, or Elevate for a few minutes each day to maintain language, math, problem solving, and other skills.

Check Out a New Place

Step outside and away from the screens. Go sightseeing in your hometown or take a day trip to a nearby hot spot. Visit some weird or Unusual Places or tour a historic location. You'll get some fresh air, learn something new, and perhaps gain a new perspective. Remember to snap some pics!

Take on a Second Job

"What?!" Many of you already plan to work over the summer. But make that second job just a few hours of career planning each week. You might read an article on resume writing, draft a cover letter template, or look through the Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook. By summer's end, you'll have made significant progress.

Learn a Foreign Language

Even if you're already bilingual in English and Spanish or majoring in French, it never hurts to pick up another language. You don't have to aim for fluency; even a few phrases are helpful. In today's global economy, your willingness and ability to speak other languages can help you in almost any career.

Try a Different Workout

While you were in school, it was certainly easiest to stick with the same exercise regimen, whether you preferred running or yoga. Now that time isn't so tight, why not branch out and try a new form of movement? You can improve your fitness and figure by cross-training. Check out free exercise channels on YouTube and the many affordable video subscription services.

Give Back to the Community

After working so hard all year, it's understandable that you want some me time. But it only takes a couple of hours to make a difference in somebody else's life. Volunteer to wash dishes at a soup kitchen, walk dogs at the animal shelter, or help with a local summer children's program. It's healthy to get your mind off yourself, and you can add the experience to your resume.

Find a New Hobby

Do something for yourself that has nothing to do with your potential vocation, major, or anything you've ever done before. Expand your brain while you relax by learning a completely new craft, musical instrument, art medium, or survival skill. You don't have to spend a lot of money and commit yourself; just try something on for size.

Read a Book for Fun

More reading might not sound restful to a student. But when was the last time you read something you truly enjoyed? Be adventurous and go for a genre you've never tried before, such as horror or romance. If you insist on multitasking, get books on CD from your public library, or try out Audible from Amazon.

Spend Time With Your Family

Not all families are full of joy, but chances are there's someone you'd like to reconnect with. You could visit a grandparent in the nursing home, offer to babysit your cousin one night, or go on a "date" with your parents. At the very least, you probably have a neighbor, mentor, close friend, or pet who would love to have some time with you.

While summer break is intended to help you recharge, remember that growing up means no more summers off. This is a time for transitioning into the adult world, which means balancing goals and tasks with recreation for a fulfilling life.
