Here are some of the things to see in January:

• 11:30 PM, eastern sky – Jupiter rising above the horizon
• 3 AM, southeastern sky – Mars rising above the horizon, climbing high in the southern sky before dawn
• 6 AM, southeastern sky – Venus and Saturn emerging above the horizon, forming a pair early in the month and appearing closest together on January 9
• 6:30 AM, southeastern sky – Mercury appearing above the horizon just before dawn toward the end of the month
• 10 PM, northern sky – Auriga constellation with its familiar circlet of bright stars, including Capella, one of the brightest stars in the sky
• 10 PM, western sky – Taurus constellation with the bright giant star Aldebaran, the Hyades cluster forming the Bull’s V-shaped head, and the Pleiades (Messier 45), the best known open cluster in the sky
• 2 AM, eastern sky – Quadrantid meteor shower peaking on the night of January 3 to 4, with up to 40 meteors per hour visible in the sky
