Duties of a medical office specialist!

A Medical office specialist is one who is responsible for carrying out front office duties in a hospital, clinic or a nursing home. A specialist can either be employed as a receptionist, biller, assistant, transcriptionist or secretary. No matter whatever post they are on, they have to take on all the duties provided to them. However, duties of a medical specialist depend on the medical unit, as well as the number of staff being employed in a health care center.

Like other medical health care providers, specialists also need to undergo medical office training program in NYC. They would be imparted with classroom, as well as hands on training session. The classroom session would comprise of studying medical subjects like anatomy, medical terminology, insurance, medical coding and billing. Hands on training session would comprise of real time experience of working in a health care center.

Let’s have a detailed look over the duties of medical office specialist:

    • Schedule appointments: The foremost duty of a medical specialist is to schedule appointments for the patients. Appointment scheduling not just refers to medical checkups but also for laboratory tests, X-ray, ECG, and other medical professionals. Additionally, they would even need to answer phone calls either of a patient (who wants to schedule an appointment or want to know his or her tests results), or of a doctor (who wants to convey a message to some patient or other medical professional). Thus due to dozens of messages that are needed to be conveyed a specialist is likely to keep a note pad along with the phone, which would help him or her do the work efficiently and without committing a mistake.
    • Handle billing: Also known as bookkeeping. It comprise of various tasks like maintaining of records, handling bills, dealing with insurance companies, ordering of supplies and collection of payments from the patients.

    • Greet patients: Another duty of medical specialist is to escort the patient to the doctor’s room or examining room. At the same time they would tell the patient to fill all the required information about them (address, age, medical history, problem for which they have come etc.) on the form. Often, they would also have to explain the procedure of treatment to the patients.
  • Clerical: Specialists who are working as a transcriptionist in a health care center they would have to transcribe dictation of doctors or patients and put it into electronic form.

Apart from excelling in all the above duties a medical specialist would also need to undergo medical emergency training from NYC institute. This would help them prepare for the worst conditions, which might occur during their job. For example, if there’s a bomb blast in the city then along with doctors, medical specialists are the ones who would have to take care of the patients during those emergency conditions.
