Topic 1 : "Awash in red ink"

  • Awash - covered with a liquid (here red ink)
  • Red ink - * this is a slang term denoting a financial loss
  • Regulatory - controlling
  • Forbearance - the quality of being patient and self controlled
  • Restructured - organized differently
  • Pile - objects positioned one on top of another / a lot of something
  • Stressed asset - an account where principal and/or interest remains overdue for more than 30 days
  • Manifold - many and of several different types
  • Provision - the action of providing or supplying something for use
  • Sizeable - large
  • Declines - to gradually become less / lower
  • Plunge - to become lower in value or level very suddenly and quickly
  • Non-performing assets - a loan for which the principal or interest payment remained overdue for a period of 90 days
  • Parlance - a group of words or style of speaking used by a particular group of people
  • Defaulted - to fail to do something, such as pay a debt, that you legally have to do
  • Repayment - the action of paying back a loan
  • Offing - likely to happen soon
  • Overhauling - overtaking
  • Inflicting -  to force someone to experience something very unpleasant
  • Evident - easily seen or understood
  • For instance - for example
  • Disclosure - the action of making new or secret information known
  • Distress - a feeling of extreme worry, sadness, or pain
  • Undergird - to strengthen or support (something) from below
  • Cognisant - having knowledge or awareness
  • Magnitude - the great size or extent of something
  • Lock-step - agreeing completely with someone
  • Autonomous - having the freedom to govern itself or control its own affairs
  • Brief - a set of instructions given to somebody about a job or task
  • Ensuring - to make something sure to happen
  • Ring-fenced - guarantee that (funds allocated for a particular purpose) will not be spent on anything else
  • Bankruptcy - a legal process involving a person or business that is unable to repay their debts
  • Defaulter - someone who does not pay interest or other money that they owe
  • Liquidation - to cause a business to close, so that its assets can be sold to pay its debts
  • Backing - support
  • Clutch - to take hold of something tightly
  • Infusion - the act of adding one thing to another to make it stronger or better
  • Fiscal - relating to government revenue, especially taxes
  • Deficit - the amount by which something, especially a sum of money, is too small
  • Underwrite - sign and accept that you are legally responsible for something (so guaranteeing payment in case loss or damage occurs)
