International Current Affairs
  • Today (29th April) is International Dance Day / World Dance Day.
    • The day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute.
    • The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who was born in 1727, a French dancer and ballet master and a great reformer of dance. 
  • Today is the "Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare".
    • This day is officially recognised by the United Nations (UN) and has been celebrated since 2005.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today announced that India is providing pharma assistance to nearly 85 nations on a grant basis to support their response to coronavirus pandemic
    • These nations include many countries in Africa, it said. 
National Current Affairs
  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced that the death toll due to coronavirus in India has surged to 1,007
    • Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country has crossed 31,000. Out of the total 31,332 cases, 22,629 cases are active while 7,696 cases have been cured, discharged or migrated.
  • The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions today made it compulsory for all central government employees to download the government's COVID-19 app 'Aarogya Setu'. 
    • All employees have been told to check their status on the app before leaving for work. 
  • Jawaharlal Nehru University will hold online classes on 'Leadership Lessons from Ramayana' on May 2 and 3 from 4 pm to 6 pm.
    • These sessions will be conducted through a webinar by the varsity's School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies and School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies faculty members. 
    • The webinar will be available for JNU's students and faculty.
  • The government today allowed inter-state movement of migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places amid the lockdown. 
    • The sending and receiving states must mutually agree to the movement of group of stranded persons by road, the order stated. 
  • Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh today announced that the lockdown and curfew will continue in the state for 2 weeks.
Science & Technology
  • The India Meteorological Department today issued a new list of names of tropical cyclones over north Indian Ocean. 
    • The list has a total of 169 names including 13 names each from 13 WMO/ESCAP member countries. 
    • Some of the names for Bangladesh include Arnab, Nisarga and Upakul among others, while names like Aag, Vyom and Gati have been chosen for India.
  • Google has announced that it will be shutting down its hyperlocal social media platform called 'Shoelace' on May 12.
Deaths
  • Versatile Bollywood Actor Irrfan Khan (53), who was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, has died today.
  • Grammy-nominated gospel singer Troy Sneed (52) died of complications from COVID-19 aged today. 
    • He was known for gospel radio hits like 'My Heart Says Yes' and 'Work It Out'. 
    • Sneed had earned a Grammy nomination for his work on the Youth For Christ's 1999 album 'Higher'.

  • Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has endorsed Democratic Party's candidate Joe Biden for the 2020 presidential race. 
    • She had lost the 2016 presidential race to Donald Trump.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The foreign ministers of BRICS nations have decided to create a "special loan instrument" of $15 billion to rebuild their economies and to overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
    • The New Development Bank (NDB), established by BRICS, will provide the loans to help the member states, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after a video conference of the ministers.
New Appointments
  • Eminent banker Suresh N Patel today took oath as the Vigilance Commissioner in the anti-corruption watchdog CVC. 
    • He has over three decades of banking experience, and has also worked as the executive director in Oriental Bank of Commerce before taking over as the Managing Director and CEO of Andhra Bank in 2015.
    • The oath was administered by Central Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari by video conferencing in New Delhi.
