Ex :

Andrew completes his voyage in 20 hours. He travels first half of the voyage  the rate of 22 kilometer per hour and second half  the rate of 24 kilometer per hour. Find the total voyage in kilometer.

Sol:

Given:

X - Total distance Andrew  travelled.

Andrew travels first half of the voyage at the rate of 22 kilometer per hour = (½) x / 22

Andrew travels second half of the voyage at the rate of 24 kilometer per hour = (½) x / 24

(1/2) x/22 + (1/2) x/24 = 20

Now multiply  2 on both sides of the equation.

We get

2 * (1/2) x /22 + 2 * (1/2) x/24 = 20 * 2

X / 21 + x / 24 = 40

Now take LCM for the denominators 22 and 24

The LCM is 264

(12*x) / (21*12) + (11*x)/ (24 * 11) = 40

12x / 264+ 11x / 264 = 40

(12x + 11x) / 264 = 40

Now multiply it by 264 on both sides

(23 x /264) * 264 = 40 * 264

23 x = 264 * 40

Now divide it by 23 on both sides

23x / 23   = 264 * 40 / 23

We get

X = 10560 / 23

X = 459 kilometers
