Roanoke College Introduces Master of Education Program for Empowering Educators

For over three decades, Roanoke College’s Education Department has been a cornerstone in shaping future educators. With a track record of producing approximately 1,000 teachers and education professionals, the department has solidified its position as a respected member of the professional education network. The faculty, boasting extensive teaching experience across various educational levels, has played a pivotal role in preparing students for successful careers in the teaching profession.

Launching a Transformative Master’s Program

Roanoke College is set to elevate its commitment to education by unveiling a new Master of Education Program, titled “Master of Education: Educational Inquiry.” Spearheaded by program coordinator Lisa Stoneman, the innovative graduate offering is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2024, pending approval from The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This initiative marks Roanoke’s second graduate degree, demonstrating the institution’s dedication to advancing education at an elevated level.

The Master of Education Program transcends traditional boundaries by integrating theory, empirical research, community outreach, innovative pedagogies, and a capstone research project. Aimed at empowering educators to become leaders and catalysts for positive change within their communities, the program broadens the scope of education studies. It goes beyond conventional classroom settings, catering to individuals interested in diverse career paths such as public K-12 education, non-profit sectors, workplace training, law, public policy, and private schooling. The program also serves recent college graduates by providing a robust intellectual foundation and practical preparation for higher degrees in education and social sciences.

Inclusive Admissions and Flexible Learning Structure

Roanoke College’s Master of Education program welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds. Graduates from Roanoke with a minimum 3.0 GPA and one academic reference are guaranteed admission. The courses, designed to be collaborative and in-person, accommodate working professionals with classes scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. New students can enroll continuously, and the ten-credit program can be completed over one year (including the summer) by taking two courses at a time. Alternatively, students can opt for a more extended two-year completion plan, taking one class at a time. Notably, the program offers recertification points for Virginia teachers, enhancing its appeal to educators seeking professional development.

Kathy Wolfe, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, emphasizes the program’s unique strength – the diversity of its student body. With participants ranging from seasoned teachers to professionals in adjacent fields, Roanoke College’s Master of Education program aspires to foster a collaborative and enriching learning environment for all its students.
