Subash Chandar, a teacher from South Auckland, is gaining online fame as “Infinity Plus One” on YouTube. He’s helping 33,000 New Zealand students with their NCEA maths exams. Chandar, who won a top teaching award in 2019, livestreams tutorials from his home at night.

His popularity has grown, especially before NCEA algebra exams. Even some teachers are tuning in. Chandar is amazed by his diverse following, from major cities to small towns. Chandar says,

“It blows me away, there are followers from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, plus small towns like Milton, Taihape and Carterton.”

He started making online NCEA tutorials a decade ago and now livestreams four to five times a week from July to November. This year, 160,000 students will take NCEA exams.

Chandar initially made videos for his students but now shares his knowledge with a broader audience. He sees it as his way of giving back to the community.

Grateful students often thank him for his help, with one calling him a hero. Chandar stopped teaching higher grades due to pressure and now teaches years seven to 10.

Chandar’s popularity reflects students’ willingness to learn, especially when they’re ready. He’s helping students access maths on their terms, outside regular school hours.
