Eligibility for Scholarships for International Students from the Government of Canada in 2024:

  • For undergraduate applications for a research-based experience, a signed institutional collaboration and student exchange agreement or memorandum of understanding between the Canadian university and the candidate’s home institution is preferred but not required. Instead of an agreement, you will be asked to present a Letter of Invitation from the University of Alberta professor who has agreed to supervise you.
  • An inter-institutional agreement is preferable but not required for graduate applicants. If no existing exchange agreement exists, graduate applications including a new or established partnership between academics from a Canadian university and the candidate’s home institution will be approved.
  • Candidates should send their applications and other supporting documentation to University of Alberta International directly through the University of Alberta International Government of Canada.
  • At the time of application, applicants must be full-time students in their proposed degree program. For example, if the application time comes between a student’s Master’s and PhD enrollment, they will be ineligible for the current scholarship year. If this describes you, it is advised that you apply again next year.
  • Scholarships cannot be postponed or renewed.
  • Candidates who have never won a scholarship from Global Affairs Canada will be given preference.
  • Scholarships are not taxable to either the Canadian school or the beneficiary.
