BadIntersections.com has been building a database of notoriously dangerous intersections for the last 3 years. This database has grown to over 11,000 locations of hazardous pedestrian, car, and bike intersections. The map aggregates data from stories covered by the media and intersection flagged by local DOT's.
Why is it important to know where the hazardous intersections are located near schools? Dangerous intersections are getting easier to find as we begin seeing patterns in our data. Here are our top reasons that cause a dangerous intersection and it usually by poor design.
Awareness of the potential danger near schools is important since you can't control how other people drive. The only thing you can do as a parent is to make your kids aware that they should be careful in these areas when walking across the street or riding their bikes. It is also important to get your city and school district to make other people aware of the potential hazards and try and fix the intersection problem.
Using the Google Places API we asked the service to help us find schools near dangerous intersections. Here are the results of our study in California . . .
62 of schools are located within 50 meters of a dangerous intersection, 240 schools are located within 200 meters & 985 schools are located within 1000 meters of an intersection in our database.
