English, as we know it today, is a result of the amalgamation of various closely related dialects that were collectively known as Early English. These dialects were brought to the east coast of Great Britain by Germanic settlers, specifically the Anglo-Saxon tribes, in the 5th century. The name "English" originates from the name of these tribes and their ancestral region of Angeln (present-day Schleswig-Holstein). Additionally, Old Norse language had a significant impact on Early English due to Viking invasions during the 9th and 10th centuries.

During the eleventh century, Britain's success under the Normans resulted in significant borrowing from Norman French. As a result, jargon and spelling patterns began to resemble those of Latin-based Romance languages, despite English not being one of them. This shift towards Middle English was marked by events such as the Great Vowel Shift that occurred in the fifteenth century in southern Britain.

While English has roots in both Old English and Norman French, many words in the language are derived from Latin roots due to its widespread use within European scholarly circles and as the language of the Christian Church. Over time, words from various other languages have also been absorbed into modern English, resulting in a vast vocabulary with intricate and inconsistent spellings - particularly when it comes to vowels.

In fact, modern English boasts a rich lexicon with over 250,000 distinct words listed by the Oxford English Dictionary - not including technical or specialized terminology. This linguistic diversity is a testament to its historical absorption of linguistic influences from all corners of the globe
