MD in Dermatology, Leprosy, and Venereology: Admission, Eligibility Criteria, and Fees

This program aims to create specialists who can provide high-quality health care and contribute to advances in science through research and training. The program includes required training that helps students recognize the health needs of the community, handle medical problems effectively, and stay aware of recent advances in their specialty. The candidate should possess a broad range of skills that enable them to practice independently, teach medical/para-medical students, and understand research methodology.

In India, there are 106 government colleges that offer MD Dermatology courses. The total number of MD Dermatology seats in government colleges across different states of the country is 455. Among all states, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of MD Dermatology seats with 44 available.

Primary Objective of  Course

  • Diagnose and manage common skin diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and leprosy.
  • Effectively manage medical emergencies related to skin, leprosy, and venereal disease.
  • Implement preventative measures against communicable, venereal diseases, and leprosy at both individual and community levels.
  • Teach necessary knowledge and laboratory skills to medical and paramedical team members.
  • Maintain a compassionate attitude towards patients and their families.
  • Evaluate and initiate investigations to solve problems related to skin, venereal diseases, and leprosy.

MD Dermatology Eligibility

  • To be eligible for admission, candidates must have an undergraduate MBBS degree from a college/university recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • The recognition cut-off dates for the medical college’s MBBS Degree courses and compulsory rotatory internship must be as prescribed by the Medical Council of India (now NMC).
  • Candidates are required to have completed a one-year compulsory rotating internship in a teaching institution or other institution recognized by the MCI.
  • The candidate must have obtained permanent registration with any State Medical Council.

MD Dermatology  Admission Process

  • To pursue MD Dermatology, applicants need to clear the NEET PG medical exam conducted by NBE.
  • The aspirants must qualify NEET-PG with the required cutoff percentile in individual categories i.e. for the general 50th percentile and 40th percentile for SC, ST and OBC to get admission in MD Dermatology.
  • Due to its high demand and less seat availability, the NEET-PG cutoff for MD Dermatology is relatively high for top private and government medical colleges in India.
  • Dermatology seats in medical colleges are available under various quotas like All India Quota seats, Management quota seats, Institutional quota seats and NRI quota seats, etc.
  • Students can opt for these quotas during NEET-PG Counseling.
