OUR FACULTIES

Welcome to the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan

Dean’s Office

FACULTY OF CLINICAL SCIENCES, COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine was one of the foundation faculties created when the University College, Ibadan came into being in 1948.

The fundamental problem which faced the Faculty in the early stages of its existence was securing wide recognition and establishing high academic and professional standard.

The alignment of the Medical School of University College Ibadan in special relation with the University of London helped to attract the recognition of the General Medical Council of Great Britain. By this special relationship, medical students of the University College Ibadan took courses in Medicine leading to the award of the MB;BS degree of the University of London.

Fourteen years of close association with the University of London which initially involved clinical clerkship in London enabled the then Faculty of Medicine of the University College Ibadan to lay down the high standards which will later be associated with the University of Ibadan and to define the deficiencies of the traditional University of London programme in relation to the peculiarities of the Nigerian situation. This association which was known as the “Scheme of Special Relationship” with the University of London came to an end in October 1962. The University of Ibadan from then started preparing students for its own MB;BS degree. It then became necessary for the then Faculty of Medicine to design a curriculum for the training of students for the environment in which they would have to practice. Some of the notable features of the Ibadan curriculum are the Ibarapa

Community Health Project and the unique community Psychiatry rotation to Aro Neuro Psychiatric Hospital. Modifications to the University of London programme resulted in changes to the structure of the professional examination whereby Paediatrics and Preventive and Social Medicine constitute separate examination subjects. The present M.B;B.S curriculum has further been revised to emphasize the importance of outside Community rotations, and increased the parts of the examination from three (3) to four (4) while keeping the same number of subjects. The curriculum of the degree of bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery extends over five academic years. In 1964, the Department of Physiotherapy was established under the Faculty of Medicine for the purpose of training Physiotherapists over a 3 year period leading to the award of B.Sc. However in 2004, the curriculum was revised in line with global trend to award the Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree after a 5 year training period.

The department of Physiotherapy has produced several postgraduates at the Masters and Ph.D levels that have been well acclaimed. In 1965, the Department of Nursing was established and was a pioneer in Nursing Education in the Continent. The Department was to produce Nurse Educators and Administrators at the B.Sc level as a 3 years programme for trained nurses until 1995 when the 5 year B.NSc. program was started. The Department commenced its Postgraduate programme in 1991 and has produced several M.Sc and Ph.D graduates, it specifically produced the first Ph.D in Nursing in the country in 2004.

During the 1977/78 session, the Faculties then Federal Military Government designated the Ibadan Faculty of Medicine as a Centre of Excellence in Medicine and on the 1st August 1980 backed by Statute of the University of Ibadan, the Faculty of Medicine became the “College of Medicine”. Thereafter, three (3) Faculties emerged from the old Faculty of Medicine: Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Dentistry and Pharmacy. In January 2002 the Departments of Human Nutrition, Health  Promotion and Education, Epidemiology, Medical Statistics and Environmental Health as well as the Department of Community Medicine and the Institute of Child Health which hitherto were under this Faculty of Clinical Sciences became an independent Faculty of Public Health. In April 2002, the Departments of Oral Pathology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Preventive Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry which were under this Faculty of Clinical Sciences also became the Faculty of Dentistry. Currently, the Faculty of Clinical Sciences comprises 13 Departments and 1 Institute: these are the Departments of Community Medicine, Nursing, Institute of Child Health, Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Paediatrics, Physiotherapy, Psychiatry, Radiology, Radiotherapy as well as Surgery.

Why our programme has been so successful.

Our success is based on the implementation of our programmes that are being drivenby highly qualified, dedicated and motivated personnel who deliver the unique academicand professional programmes of the Faculty. Inculcating professional discipline and ethics have made our students responsive and responsible and therefore leaders in their respective professional community.
The success of our programmes is due to the fact that the Faculty continues to evaluate its programmes such that our Physiotherapy and Nursing programmes are now 5-year programmes and have been accredited by NUC.

Prospects for the future and plans to ensure that the high standard is maintained

The Faculty is not relenting in its efforts at maintaining and improving on its present standard. The Faculty is in the process of reviewing its MB;BS curriculum to ensure that the students imbibe values such as Health Economics, Bioethics and Human Resources Management that will enhance the unique training programme of the Ibadan graduate. Similarly, the Nursing and Physiotherapy undergraduate curricula are being reviewed.

Though the Faculty will benefit from improved man-power, the Faculty also ensures continuing professional education for its Academic Staff and provides improved teaching aids in a conducive environment. The Faculty is grateful to many multilateral agencies that ensure that this internal and external continuing professional development is possible. The Faculty will continue to explore ways of links programmes with external competences and funding sources. The Faculty is the largest in the College of Medicine and it is staffed with efficient teachers.Apart from this, our Departments have equipment for training medical students and the environment is conducive to learning with teaching aids.

Institute of Child Health

About Us

The Institute of Child Health (ICH), founded in 1960, is Nigeria’s first institute for research on diseases affecting children and related issues. The ICH was established from a grant given to the Federal Government of Nigeria by the United African Company (UAC) at independence. The aim of the Federal Government then was to establish centres in different parts of the country for the specific purpose of reducing the high incidence of morbidity and mortality among children in Nigeria. The ICH was initially supported by the Ministry of Education via the University of Ibadan, the Ministry of Health via regular subventions, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Now, the University of Ibadan, is responsible for the running of the institute.

As a forward-thinking institution that wants to become a global centre of excellence, ICH’s mandate has grown over the past 60 years to include research, training, and services, all relating to childhood through adolescence. This is in line with the University of Ibadan’s vision and the need to meet societal needs.

Our Vision

To be a world-class centre of excellence for child and adolescent health research, training, and services with evidence of global impact.

Our Mission

To provide an enabling environment for learning, quality research, and need-driven services that support the health and well-being of children and their future adults.

HISTORY

The Nuclear Medicine Centre was established in 2006 under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the peaceful application of radioactive isotopes. It is the first nuclear medicine centre in Nigeria. It is fully a University of Ibadan and University College Hospital’s Department housed at the Afe Babalola building University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan. The centre has grown from 7 founding staff to 26 professionals and sees patients from all over the country. Medical consultants are available for daily scans and thyroid clinic activities.

VISION

To be the most outstanding cancer care centre south of Sahara.

MISSION

To offer comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services in a most humane environment.

CORE VALUE

Excellence, Compassion and Superlative Care.

OUR SERVICES

Nuclear medicine utilizes the unique capacities of imaging at the cellular level for early detection of cancer and other disease conditions when it is still responsive to treatment and cure. It is an imaging system that uses “open” sources of radioisotopes. This technology allows nuclear medicine to provide important diagnostic information at the cellular level. In addition, nuclear medicine is the only field of medicine where the same agent that is used for diagnosis may be used for treatment. We use low level of radionuclides for advanced diagnosis and treatment of disease conditions in the body, especially cancer. We provide highly specialized treatments for cancer such as thyroid, liver, neuroendocrine and metastatic prostate cancer. With over 95% success rate with radioactive iodine treatment of patients with early thyroid cancer, our professionals are highly trained and treat patients with respect and dignity. In the last 10 years, over 10,000 patients have been scanned or treated using this new molecular technique in Nigeria. Nigerians can now look forward to receiving world-class healthcare locally instead of travelling overseas. We now have more than 10 Radioiodine suits for admission and treatment of benign and malignant thyroid diseases.

Nursing

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

FACULTY OFCLINICAL SCIENCES, COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was one of the foundation departments of the University of Ibadan Medical School at its founding in 1948 and it moved to the University College Hospital at its completion in 1957. Since then, the Department has been active in its triple functions of training, service and research.

The Department has been a central participant in the training of medical undergraduates in Ibadan for the past fifty years. In the first 25 years of its existence, it served as a preparatory centre for trainee Obstetricians and Gynaecologists who were working towards certification by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist. In the last 3 decades however, the Department has been preparing trainees for certification by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons.  In 2003, the Department in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, U.S.A., commenced Masters Degree programmes in Reproduction Biology and Population and Reproductive Health.

In all, more than 300 certified Obstetricians and Gynaecologists have had part or their entire specialist training in the Department. In addition, the Department runs periodic update courses for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The Department, in close collaboration with the School of Midwifery, also trains midwives. The Department was the first centre for the formal training of health personnel to provide family planning services in Nigeria. In then last 45 years, about 15,000 trainees (doctors, nurses, community health workers, etc)   have been trained to provide modern contraceptive services.

For the purpose of clinical services, the Department is presently divided into 5 units and these are: – Unit I (Infertility and Assisted Conception Unit) Unit II (Fertility Research And Endocrinology Unit) Unit III (Gynaecologic Oncology Unit) Unit IV (Feto Maternal Medicine Unit) Unit V (Genitourinary/Urogynaecology Unit). There are presently 22 consultants in the Department.

The Department is the pioneer site for reproductive health research in Nigeria as evidenced by the fact that   more than 2,000 peer – reviewed articles have been published in reputable scientific journals from research activities undertaken in the Department. In recognition of its excellence, the Department was designated a collaboration centre for Research on Human Reproduction (CCR) by the World Health Organization (WHO).  It is also a research site for the , “ South- to -South cooperation in Reproductive Health” an international organization for research into reproductive health problems in developing countries and the Aids Prevention Initiative In Nigeria(APIN).

While engaged in these training and research activities, more than 250,500 women have had babies delivered in our labour ward, a sizeable population of them having been referred for life-threatening complications in pregnancy and labour. Many others have received specialist attention for various gynaecological disorders.

The Department has been fortunate to have had dedicated and energetic professionals steer its affairs since inception. Many of them have gone on to assume positions of greater responsibilities in health and education administration. A list of all the Heads of Department since its inception includes:

Paediatrics

FACULTY OF CLINICAL SCIENCES, COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRICS
Foundation:    Although the Department of Paediatrics was formally created in 1962, Paediatrics as a specialty had always existed in the UCH.  However, this was as a unit within the Department of Medicine.  With the appointment of the first Professor of Paediatrics in 1963, teaching and examination in Paediatrics for medical students was done independently, and not as a part of medicine.

Teaching:   As the first academic Department of Paediatrics in Nigeria (and West Africa), the teaching of facts, skills and attitudes essential for the effective care of children has always been done at all levels, postgraduate as well as undergraduate.  However, emphasis was on undergraduate training initially.  This was done with Social Paediatrics as the hub around which the wheel of all these activities turned.  Students were encouraged to see each patient not merely as a clinical case, but as a child within a family, home and a neighbourhood by organizing home visits thrice a week and discussing the findings on such visits at weekly Social Paediatrics Seminars at which the students were the principal presenters.  Until recently, student nurses also took part in these activities.

Emergency Paediatrics:  This began as a Children’s Emergency Room in the Medical Outpatients Department (MOP) which closed at 6.00pm at which time children who were too ill to go home were transferred to the Casualty Department together with the adults.  Later, a part of the Casualty Department was set aside for children.  In 1988, after the Casualty Department moved to the new Accident and Emergency Unit, the Department of Paediatrics took over all of the old Casualty Department and with a generous donation from a Nigerian philanthropist, Otunba Subomi Balogun, the unit was re-designated the Otunba Tunwase Children’s Emergency Ward in his honour.

Postgraduate Training:  Initially, postgraduate training comprised the gaining of experience for a year or two in the UCH while preparing for foreign professional membership/fellowship postgraduate examinations for which such trainees went abroad.  In 1975, a Master in Medicine (M.Med) Programme set up by the University of Ibadan marked the beginning of the local postgraduate training in Nigeria, but our department did not enroll any students on this programme before it was very soon, quickly overtaken by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 1976.  Currently, the department presents candidates for the National Postgraduate Medical College Examinations in Paediatrics as well as the West African Postgraduate Medical Examination of which Ibadan is the regional headquarter.  The Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme in Paediatrics was inaugurated in 1973 and to date has been awarded to eight deserving teachers/clinicians/researchers.  Three others are currently working on various theses on this programme.

The UCH Department of Paediatrics retains the leading position among similar departments in Nigeria.  It has trained a number of specialists since the inception of the Postgraduate programme in Nigeria and has 14 established Consultants posts which are filled mainly by our graduates.

Research:      Our department was a pioneer in most areas of Paediatric research in Nigeria.  A Paediatric Research Laboratory was established where bilirubin estimation on samples obtained within and outside the hospital was carried out.  This laboratory set the pace in research into neonatal jaundice, malaria and sickle cell disease in children.  Our cytogenetic facility was for many years, the only one of its kind in Nigeria.  The prevailing economic situation in the hospital and Nigeria forced a discontinuation of this facility several years ago. We have also established a modification for the qualitative estimation of peroxidase haemolysis as an indirect measure of vitamin E which impacts on several research areas.  Our research laboratory maintains its leadership position in research on G6PD and neonatal jaundice.

Research funds have come from the WHO and UNICEF, as well as sums from the Senate of the University of Ibadan. However, much of our work is done through the sheer ingenuity of the staff often supplemented by money from their own pockets.  Senior Registrars working for the Postgraduate Professional Part II (Final) examination sometimes receive small grants from UCH, in addition to some funds from their own pockets, particularly in undertaking studies which are not completely covered by the research facilities of their supervising consultants.
