2022 had been a blockbuster year for the VFX industry. The number of films released based on VFX was massive and stupendous this year. From that populous list, here are the selected 20 best VFX-based films list of this year. VFX artists from well-known VFX institutes in India contributed to this list enormously.

This Movie is a Visual marvel, as expected. There aren’t many glaring CGI errors in a film that is virtually entirely made up of Visual Effects. The motion-capture work on the Na’vi, the tall, blue inhabitants of the alien planet Pandora, is nothing short of amazing, despite some of the advanced technology’s subpar aesthetics. The movie is indeed a VFX course for upcoming VFX artists. The visual effects were done by Weta Digital, a New Zealand-based visual effects studio that also contributed to the recent “Planet of the Apes” trilogy and “The Lord of the Rings” films.
Digital Domain Visual Effects Supervisor Jay Barton and his team of VFX artists delivered approximately 370 VFX shots over eight sequences for the third Fantastic Beasts film from Warner Bros. Pictures. Thousands of magic users have gathered to support the candidates for office in one of the scenes. The team faced a hurdle in producing the enormous throng digitally because there could only be 80 extras on set due to COVID restrictions. Around 5,000 distinct, lifelike digihumans were produced by Digital Domain for the segment.
Though faced backlash for its storyline and dialogues, Brahmastra’s visual effects received huge applause across the country. The script demanded a mythological plot with VFX-created elements in “Brahmastra. It won’t be incorrect to claim that “Brahmastra” is the first Bollywood movie to accomplish VFX in India on par with those in Hollywood.
Visually, the film makes an effort to live up to the ambitious grandeur of the genre after spending four years in production and being shot even during Covid. The top-notch Stereoscopic 3D effects delivered an immense theatrical experience, especially the combat scene that takes place in the rain is particularly intriguing and visually appealing.
According to Wikipedia, the movie reportedly made 200 crores at the end of two weeks, making it the third Kannada movie after K.G.F: Chapter 1 and K.G.F: Chapter 2 to accomplish that feat. It was claimed that the movie made 14 crores net from the Hindi version and 7.5 crores net from the Telugu version after 16 days.
It is the sequel to Top Gun, a 1986 film starring Pete “Maverick.” For its feature and episodic team, Framestore has engaged Ryan Tudhope as Creative Director and VFX Supervisor. On Top Gun: Maverick, Tudhope served as the VFX Supervisor on the production side.
Love and Thunder, the fourth Thor film from Marvel, finds hammer-wielding hero (Chris Hemsworth) confronting his toughest opponent yet, the supervillain Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). RSP’s team of more than 150 artists spread across three sites worked under the supervision of production VFX Supervisor Jake Morrison and VFX Producer Lisa Marra.
For the studio’s new blockbuster hit, more than 300 visual effects shots were provided.
Jurassic World Dominion’s cast and creative team join the experts from Industrial Light & Magic to discuss how the numerous dinosaurs of the franchise’s crowning work were produced using computer effects. On August 16, a special extended version of Jurassic World Dominion was released on 4K, Blu-ray, and digital platforms and has been a remarkable success.
In addition to five VES Awards, Doctor Strange received nominations for Outstanding Visual Effects at the BAFTA and Academy Awards.
The movie earned the Hollywood Award for Visual Effects (VES) Award for Outstanding Created Environment, and the Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Animated Effects in a Live-Action Production.
RRR is an artistic masterpiece with breathtaking visual effects from the very first frame. Scenes are created by VFX supervisor Srinivas Mohan and his army of VFX teams that push your own perceptions of what people and other earthly living things are capable of. RRR provides us with many examples of cinematic artistry that excite the audience, whether it be Jr. NTR’s fight with a tiger, Charan’s struggle against an entire village, or the bewildering scene where the two are on a bridge attempting to rescue the life of a young child in the river.
Morbius movie digital team developed technology that allows visual effects to enhance storytelling in ways that were just not conceivable even a few years ago, while also improving the on-screen talent’s performances. John Fragomeni, president of Digital Domain worldwide, says, “We’ve been collaborating directly with the actors and directors as the main VFX provider on Morbius, which has given us the ability to truly iterate on the concepts”.
Although Reeves used a realistic method to convey his Batman story, a talented visual effects crew was inevitable to help bring the action to the screen. One of them was the well-known VFX studio Wt FX, run by the two-time Oscar nominee and supervisor Anders Langlands.
Director Karan Malhotra said in the film, “To do this, we had to plan for a year and a half, four months of massive set construction, 500+ workers, and crew members of the setting department (sic). In addition, he said that the movie’s “finest glory” was achieved after a laborious two and a half years of VFX production and 140 days of filming.
The undetectable nature of the visual effects of KGF 2 speaks much about the project’s success in huge graphs. The best indication of quality post-production is the level of illusion it gives to the audience. It easily surpassed the 100 crore club milestone.
Abhishek Sharma’s movie Ram Setu gained a cult following and was praised for its gripping narrative, diverse genre, interesting scenario, and VFX. In RamSetu, VFX was crucial in creating a world that had never existed before, according to Abhishek Sharma, this helped to shape the story that would later become known as the “cult-in-the-making” of the movie.
It is about a highly developed technological kingdom that clings firmly to its African-inspired origins. The VFX team sedulously worked to give this a parallel world a tactile quality so that viewers could experience the commotion of the bustling city and the brilliance of the civilization that gave rise to it.
MPC offered a full range of services to Universal Pictures and Monkeypaw Productions, including direct collaboration with the directors on concept art and visualisation throughout pre-production and the delivery of more than 675 intricate VFX shots. This includes designing extraterrestrial creatures, creating computer-generated cloudscapes, and using a novel technique to turn daytime photography into nighttime.
In Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives, 350 out of the 800-900 shots received VFX treatment. While much of that work was completed during filming, the team didn’t discover a crucial element the dripping scene across the cave was absent until post-production. That grew in importance, according to Billington. Set expansions were connected by the VFX crew, and the drips were later placed in the caves.
It’s admirable how Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan-1 chooses to provide us with something new. The opulent sets are as promised, and some VFX/CGI gives the natural settings the necessary majesty. VFX studio NY Vfxwaala handled the Visual effects for Ponniyin Selvan.
The majority of the VFX in the backyard was handled by Scanline VFX, including the expansion of the set, assistance with weapon design, the cloaking/decloaking effect for the time soldiers, and their destruction. The scene was filmed outside Canada Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, and they took care of all the exterior Lab shots, creating an astonishing complete CG environment. They then took care of all the work within the Lab, creating a totally CG atmosphere.
David Hernandez, the director of Lola VFX, handled Soryan’s ageing process and assisted with challenging face replacement images.
VFX supervisor Bill Westenhofer (Life of Pi), who worked on the film for three years, contributed his skills to the project as well. The final version of the movie includes about 2,700 of the 3,500 visual effects shots: The third act was handled by Wt FX; the mine sequence in which Black Adam tries to save Amon Tomaz was handled by Digital Domain; the fly-by chase and Black Adam’s battle with the tanks and armies in the desert were handled by Scanline VFX; a flashback scene was created by Effetti Digitali Italiani; and the impressive sets for the film were expanded by UPP and Rodeo FX.
