Bosaso: 20 people have been killed and dozens more injured in the anti-government protests that have been going on for several days in the disputed areas of Somalia. Police and the army have been battling protesters for more than a week in Laskanud, a disputed town between Somaliland and neighboring Puntland reports the news agency Reuters. Laskanood city is one of the semi-autonomous regions of Somalia. At least 20 people were killed and dozens were injured, said Mohammad Farah, a doctor at a public facility hospital in Laskanud. He said, 'I saw the dead bodies of the victims being brought to the hospital.'

The protesters are demanding that control of the Somaliland town be handed over to Puntland and also allege that the security forces have failed to end the insecurity in the city. "Somaliland forcefully occupied Laskanud and failed to secure it, so we are demanding that they leave," protester spokesman Adan Jamak Ogle told Reuters. We cannot tolerate the continued killing of civilians."

Somaliland was separated from Somalia in 1991. But it has not gained widespread international recognition for its independence. The region has been mostly peaceful while Somalia has been battling three decades of civil war, with Ahmed Elmi Osman Karsh, Puntland's vice president, accusing security forces of violence.
