The Man of Steel will be facing his biggest foe in the third season of Superman & Lois, but don’t get your hopes up on seeing Jon Cryer reprising the role. Previously, Cryer made a splash in the Arrowverse with his take on Lex Luthor in the Supergirl series. Though the character had been written off, he was later resurrected for the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, appearing in other Arrowverse shows like Batwoman, Arrow, and The Flash.
Amid recent reports that Lex Luthor would be featured in the third season of Superman & Lois, fans had taken to social media to speak about their hopes in seeing Cryer reprise the role. But that’s not going to happen, as Cryer himself has weighed in. Responding on Twitter directly to the fans, Cryer said he was informed by the show’s creative team that they were going in another direction with the Lex Luthor character. With that said, he probably couldn’t have accepted the offer anyway, as the actor already has his schedule filled up at the time when filming would begin.
“Would’ve been fun. But I’m not sure I could’ve played Lex on Superman & Lois even if they wanted to do this,” Cryer said, via ScreenRant. “I’m supposed to start shooting a new series for NBC in February.”
He added, “And for the record, the folks at DC were very cool and gave me a heads up that the show was going a different way with character before they started looking. Most of the time, actors learn about this stuff when it comes out in the trades. I’m grateful they were classy about it.”
Jon Cryer Had Been Hoping to Get Involved with Superman & Lois
Cryer had previously said he’d be up to return as Lex Luthor, even naming Superman & Lois as a possible show where that could happen. Last year, the actor told ComicBook.com that he felt like his version of Lex Luthor’s story came to a natural end, but at the same time, he was keeping himself open to a possible return if he were to be given that call.
“I had been feeling like [this would be the end], but I also want to honor this version of the character,” Cryer said at the time. “I like the Arrowverse. I think they do a great job with it. I think Superman & Lois is fantastic. I think Doom Patrol is fantastic, and Titans is pretty great. And Stargirl, I’ve only seen one episode, but it seems like fun. I thought Black Lightning was terrific.”
He added, “So I want to honor Lex in the Arrowverse. So if they’ve got a great arc for him on Superman & Lois, or The Flash, or Titans or whatever, I’m happy to find a way to come back and be a part of that.”
