There’s a new contender in the battle of the killer dolls.
The titular star of Blumhouse’s latest horror flick, M3GAN—short for Model 3 Generative Android—is more than just an intelligent, lifelike doll designed to be a girl’s best friend: she has superhuman strength and is murderously protective of her new charge. Ahead of the film’s January release, the minds behind M3GAN sat down with Entertainment Weekly to debate whether the new doll on the shelf could best the terrifying toys that came before her.
Writer and producer James Wan, who was also behind demonic doll Annabelle, says that there’s no competition between the possessed Raggedy Ann and her artificially-intelligent counterpart.
“Listen, M3GAN is a whole new breed that we haven’t seen before. I wouldn’t put it past M3GAN to have great tricks up her sleeves, especially if we’re lucky enough to have future stories. Why can’t M3GAN have rocket launchers at her fingertips? That would be amazing. It would blow any doll off the planet.”
M3GAN’s on-screen inventor Allison Williams is also wary of getting in the way of her creation. Playing a “brilliant roboticist” who gifts her latest android prototype as a friend to her newly-orphaned niece (Violet McGraw), the actress told EW:
“I wouldn’t ever bet against M3GAN. Ever, ever. I’ve got to go with my girl. She has the worldwide web in her being. She could win anything.”

Though Wan and Williams have their bets firmly placed on M3GAN, producer Jason Blum says that the battle between M3GAN and a killer doll like Chucky from the Child’s Play franchise would be no contest—but Annabelle is a whole other story. The Blumhouse Productions founder weighed in:
“I thought you were going to say, ‘[who would win] between M3GAN and Chucky.’ That’s tough, because Annabelle has magic powers, that’s a tough one. I don’t know about that. But if it was Chucky, M3GAN would win.”
As for director Gerard Johnstone, his gut reaction says that the evil Annabelle would win…but only a proper battle could truly answer the question.
“Who would win in a fight between M3GAN and Annabelle? Well, I guess because Annabelle’s a demon, maybe she would win. Maybe we should make a movie and find out!”
While it’ll probably be awhile before we get an on-screen showdown between M3GAN and Annabelle to settle the score, M3GAN hits theaters January 5, 2023. Watch the full trailer below:
