The jury had drawn up a list of 21 sites or buildings dating from antiquity to the twentieth century, located on all continents. The criteria included aesthetics, architectural feat and historical relevance of the site. Following the vote of millions of Internet users around the world, 7 sites were designated new wonders of the world, on July 7, 2007 in Lisbon:

Taj Mahal

In first place Taj Mahal of world wonders Seven: The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. This jewel of Mughal architecture was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Arjumand Banu Begam, who died giving birth to their fourteenth child. The construction of the Taj Mahal lasted 17 years, from 1631 to 1648, it combines an Islamic, Iranian, Ottoman and Indian style. More than 6 million tourists go there every year, it is one of the ten most visited monuments in the world.

In fact, the Taj Mahal, which is said to have been built by Shah Jahan, was a temple to Lord Shiva, possibly built by King Paramardi Dev in the 4th century. According to historian Purushottam Oak, not only was the Taj Mahal built centuries before the Mughals came to India, but research has shown that errors in pronunciation resulted in ‘Tejo Mahalaya’ becoming the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan captured it and made it a mausoleum.

2. The Great Wall of China

Second World Wonder: The Great Wall of China is a monument built more than 2000 years ago by the Qin and Han dynasties to protect Chinese territory from Mongol invaders. It is a series of military fortifications built along China’s northern border. The height of the wall varies from 6 to 8 meters and it is 4 to 6 meters wide. It stretches over 21,000 kilometres, it is the most important architectural structure ever built, both in length, surface and mass. An endless stone snake that follows the sinuosities of the landscape, from Shanhaiguan in Hebei province, to Jiayuguan in eastern Gansu province.

3. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu Peru

Machu Picchu is the 3rd world wonder: The construction of Machu Picchu dates back to the 15th century, during the great period of Inca civilizations. It was one of the residences of Emperor Pachacútec, a religious sanctuary, then a refuge for the Incas who tried to resist the Spanish conquistadors. Its strategic location, difficult to access, was indeed their asset to carry out their resistance. During the fall of the Inca Empire, while the construction of Machu Picchu in Peru was not completed, the sacred city was abandoned and forgotten for centuries. It was not until 1870 that the ruins were discovered!

4. The Colosseum in Rome

the Colosseum in Rome is the fourth world wonder: The Colosseum in Rome in Italy (Colosseo) is a huge amphitheater where entertainment, gladiatorial fights and killings took place during antiquity. 5. Christ the Redeemer Statue, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Christ the Redeemer is the fifth world wonder: “O Cristo Redentor”, a Brazilian symbol, is however mostly the work of a French sculptor! It was Paul Landowsky who set about the task between 1926 and 1931. By building this statue at the top of Corcovado at 710 meters above sea level in Brazil, the Church wanted to assert its influence in Brazil. Christ the Redeemer is 38 meters high (including 8 meters of pedestal). It can be reached by train + escalator. No less than 600,000 visitors come to pray or admire it every year.

6. Petra Jordan

Pretra Jordan is the 6th world wonder: At the crossroads of East and West, the Petra site in Jordan is hidden between steep-walled rocks. A fabulous, monumental setting, sublimely furnished by the Nabataeans. The place is only accessible by a narrow mountain path through a canyon about 1.5 kilometers long and 200 meters deep. Carved into the pink rock, its façade is 43 meters high. Built in antiquity by the Edomites in the 1st century BC, Petra was an essential passage for caravans that transported incense, spices and other goods between Arabia, Egypt, Syria and the Mediterranean. In the 18th century, changes in roads and earthquakes led to the gradual abandonment of the city.

7. Chichen Itza, Mexico

Chichen Itza is the world wonder seven: Chichén Itzá is an ancient Mayan city on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico and one of the most important and visited archaeological sites in the region. The supply of water to the city was once ensured by the presence of two large natural wells, this is the reason for its name because Chichén means “mouth of the well”. These sacred wells, indispensable to life here, were considered the entrances to the Mayan underworld. Chichén Itzá was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
