 A SALLY ON THE ESSAY

It is too hard to define an essay, not of course so hard to understand the definitions. Working on definitions is a great quality of work. The term 'essay' has been defined from various angles from time to time. Thus we have a large stock of praiseworthy definitions. Dr. Johnson defines the essay ," a loose Sally of the mind, an irregular undigested piece, not a regular and orderly performance." According to Hudson, " The essay may be regarded roughly as a composition on any topic, the chief negative features of which are comparative brevity and the comparative want of exhaustiveness."  Hallward and Hill patiently has made us recognised as ' not merely a short analysis of Subject, not a mere epitome, but rather a picture of writer's mind, as affected for the moment, by subject, with which he is dealing." On the other hand, if we see and check the etymological meaning of the word, 'essay' is found to be in a large gap between meaning and definition works, but not loosely. What about Sally? Of course the meaning is not loosely fitting. The sally is the brainstorming mind which calls attention to a particular matter, either a subject or the branch of the subject.

Only human beings can use both brain and mind. Thus he is a rational being and has personality. Personality comes from the universal action of authority and principle. An essay is shaped in the mind and the impression is expressed by the power of the brain. So personality is an absolute essential element of an essay because of the power of authority. Therefore , the subject of the essay is important , before that , it is more important how the subject is treated and stamped in the essay. An essayist is impressed by fact and feeling, or by circumstance and consequence. He conveys the thoughts and feelings with his readers, of course not with infidelity and unintelligibility. But this does not mean that he has to maintain the hard and first rules for his work. That is why expressions of impression taste variously, various reactions to the same matter.

The sally happens in the author's mind in going to deal with some subject or subjects. He is influenced by the subject or subjects. He has his own thoughts about the subject or subjects. Man has thought which varies man to man. One sees it as 'six', another as 'nine'. Also the range of thought is unlimited. In an essay, it expresses men' thoughts. Thoughts bring thoughts: thoughts are not exhaustive and all- pervasive. There may be doubts whether the essay is expressed roughly or in an unsystematic way. Doubtlessly , an essay is completed by the author as his concern.

An essay is a form of art. The art has its own features of content and form. The content of the essay means the subject which is selected from the author 's mental accessing power. Being a type of prose form, an essay may be descriptive, narrative, expository or intermix. It may contain scientific, economic ,  political, historical content. The content is the trend of the author's thoughts. Trends vary and then views are different. But the content of the essay is viewed clearly and effectively. Though thoughts are seen having different ways, but content dealt is clear, logical and in an order string. The form has no standard formula to be applied in every case. There are no absolute rules about the form of an essay. Absolutely, an essayist has his own style of writing that speaks for him and that speaks about his personality. His observing power is the deposit of principle and authority, and views and visions, whatever the subject matter.

According to Benson, the well-known has a charming effect of feelings and experiences about different matters, without the attachment of a resume. Indeed, an essayist is serious about life, but the seriousness is not about preaching a moral lesson or the  economy of stone written ethical sermons. His action dwells the homestead presentation of matters of what happens in the world. Not by his judgment, but by his power of art, he brings the reader's attention and interest in life. He points out to them their position ,proposition and scope of life. An essayist makes his readers well-aware about the roles , and necessities in this realm of life
